    done

I will assume I do NOT want to "proceed without Javascript", so, will NOT click on that

so (??), I guess if Norton does NOT download, after "Z" minutes (or hours),
then I'm back to "square one" re the Javascript issue or point

  2. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Sorry, stepped out for awhile. Right you do NOT want to "proceed without Javascript." Everything should run just fine.

successfully downloaded Norton (but don't know where same is in this PC)

successfully installed Norton (they installed it on their own)--don't know
where same is installed in this PC

Norton first checked my D dive--they scanned about 100,000 files (of the some 180,00 files in the D drive)

then Norton started to scan the C drive (and they scanned about 100,000
files of the some 180,000 files in the C drive)

remained online for as long as I could re all the above

NetZero disconnected after a total of about 200,000 files were scanned

the Norton thing just kept scanning (for awhile) offline

I was waiting until the end of all their scanning, in hopes of receiving their report, but the report never came (and I guess because NetZero disconnected me)

I can try all over again re Norton---I don't believe (but don't know)
Norton found any virus infections (up to the point of some 200,000
files scanned)-----I can posting some "chronological detail" (or more detail)

find/found it "weird" that the Norton thing download, AND the Norton thing install, are not in/on, say, "Programs" (after I hit "start")

  4. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Norton installed some stuff to your hard drive, but it did not install a program in the since of something you can execute from start programs.

You may have to periodically open a new browser window to keep NetZero from automatically disconnecting you.

Move on to doing an Ad-Aware scan.

    Open Ad-Aware

    Check for updates now

    download any updates

    click on Start

    Select Perform Full System Scan

When the scan if finished let me know. I will give you more instructions

  5. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

you mean switch to a different ISP (ie not have NetZero as my ISP) ??
--maybe I'll just send a "nasty" e mail to NetZero technical support
---shhot, they never told me that they would disconnect me after, say,
    two (2) hours

I'll do the Ad-Aware thing in a few minutes

  6. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Might have to, I keep looking through their support site there is no mention of an online time limit, and if there is how to override it.

When the Ad-Aware scan is finished, don't close it. I will talk you through what to do after it is done.

  7. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I forgot to send the posting below until I had finished the Ad-Aware scan

    results of the scan

358,911 objects scanned (scanned the C drive, the D drive, and the
    IE favorites)

    left side

    28 running processes
828 process modules 28 objects recognized
    0 objects ignored
28 new critical objects, and next to that a flashing bug

    right side

    0 processes identified
    0 objects identified
    2 registry keys identified
    10 recognized values identified
    16 files identified
    0 folders identified

    what now ???

  8. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    forgot

    12 negligible objects

  9. eigenvalue

geez, I'm "a corporal" now----never got that high (??) in the USMC,
and in spite (??) of being a noteworthy jock in the USMC

  10. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    Clck on Critical Objects tab

    check all unchecked boxes

    click on Next

    click on OK

    Close Ad-Aware

  11. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

oh well, when I got jumped by two (2) aggrerssive mugers, in Newark around
March 1974, I basically responded with "you gus aren't killing anybody, today"

and I can "thank" the USMC for being able to "appropriately" respond

hmm---the ACLU couldn't "protect" those "turkeys" that day

  12. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

where is the critical objects tab ?? you mean click on the words "criticsal objects" ?? nothing happens when I do that

  13. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

should I click on "next" ?? and then would the critical objects tab "pop up" ??

  14. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    Sorry click Next

then follow the rest of my instructions

  15. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

great ie removed or deleted those critical objects (and some report
    popped up)

break time ?? for a couple of hours ???

geez, some outfit named Alexa sure had a LOT of critical objects

  16. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    I'll be here.

  17. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

hey, something wrong happened---and I don't know if it was due to those 28 critical objects which were deleted

I cannot "connect" with links cited in incoming e mails, nor even connect with
major geeks (and your stuff) when major geeks' "thing" comes up in my e mails from you, which notify me that you've posted something

---the stuff in blue, within incoming e mails (ANY incoming e mail), to me just don't work or I cannot connect via that/those links to anything

to post this I had to do
    major geeks search
then click on major geeks web search result
then log in (with eigenvalue, and my password)
then search on major geeks re "software", and then "go"
and then look for "my topic", and then click on my topic

  18. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

your "I'll be here" posting, below, wasn't even transmitted to me (yet)
    by e mail

  19. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    Did you restart your computer?

  20. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

your "did you start your computer" incoming e mail was received, and that e mail message is not even posted below

don't remember about starting my computer--I right clicked on some
link (re some other incoming e mail message), then clicked on save,
and the got some weird save icon thing (and the "save as" thing, which
I never did understand)--left clicking on the latter link (that OTHER link in some OTHER incoming e mail)

oops, your latest posting just came up in the middle of typing this

I'll restart my computer just to see what happens

  21. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

The best piece of advice I can give you is don't click on anything in an email unless you are absolutely certain of where it came from.

  22. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    whew

I restarted my computer and everything seems to be working OK, now

I should have said, below, when I right clicked on a blue link, in an incoming e mail, a drop down menu came up---then I clicked on "open", and what came up was "open with", above a box, and a LONG list of icons, and names (many of those weird names) associated with those icons

I never could figure out what that "open with" thing was all about
---I've got that "windows for dummies" book (or books) and I guess I should read those books (such as "windows for dummies re windows 98")

there are just too many alternative ways of doing things re PCs, I guess

  23. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

well (re your below) I concur concerning unsolicited stuff, but this was via various technical sources like Ziff Davis, and a Wi Max newsletter, a magazine
or web site I've used before (named EXtreme tech), and stuff like that

geez, maybe I should do another Lavasoft/Ad-Aware check soon ??

  24. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Those for dummies books can be real useful sometimes.

Ok, lets run Spybot Search & Destroy

click Search for Updates, if there are any updates select them all

    click Download Updates

    click Search & Destroy

    click Check for problems

When the scan is finished let me know.

  25. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

there is a tea time update, and a "skins" update (for the colorblinded)

---I don't need them, do I ?? as I recall you said, previously, don't check "tea time stuff", and I'm not colorblind

  26. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

You can download the update, just don't enable it.

  27. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    did not download either

have results (and read their tutorial)

media plex one entry no info available
Alexa related one entry does not look "spooky"
error guard 3 entries no info available
back web lite 53 enties does not look spooky
spyware stormer I thought that was deleted ??

my thoughts are to delete (?), or remove, media plex. error guard,
    and spyware stormer---concur ???

  28. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Get rid of everything in bold above

But don't close the program yet

  29. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    I possibly should add

    ran spybot with memokit "off"
    with inbox "on"
    with major geeks "on"

    resources dropped to 5%

    took inbox "off"
    and took major geeks "off"

    resources went up to 18%

  30. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    done

that eliminated those nine entries, with only the 53 "back web lite" remaining

back web lite wasn't even checked (in its box)---how did spybot know I didn't want to eliminate those 53 entries ???

    program not closed

  31. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

OK after you clean the bugs

    click on Immunize

Premanently running bad download blocker for Internet Explorer

Check if unchecked Enable permanent blocking of bad addresses in Internet Explorer

Block all bad pages silently in box

Now Click Immunize at the top the one with the green plus next to it +

    close spybot.

  32. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

back web lite is used by several legitimate programs to check for updates.

  33. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    whoa

    a box popped up

    Warning

"649 bad products already blocked. 1346 additional protections possible. please immunize"

    do I click "OK" ??

  34. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

  35. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    I clicked that "OK"

    permanent blocking was already checked

block all bad pages silently was already in the box

I clicked on the green plus at the top next to immunize, but nothing happened, so I don't know if that was "effected", ie no response
---no words, no nuthin---still close Spybot anyhow ???

  36. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    close spybot.

Next is SpywareBlaster. Did you install it or is it in a folder on your desktop?

  37. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    closed spybot

    PC crashed

too tired to do Spywareblaster tonight

    am hitting the sack

  38. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    Enough for tonight.

  39. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    am back

spyware blaster, so far as I know, was both installed and, after that, that install was put nto a folder---that folder (named by me "spyware blaster") contains 12 files, totaling 2.43 MB

I have files, with weird icons, in a DIFFERENT folder, such as the following

    sbdatasw.dlb
    spyhotsd includes
    spybotsd14rec2
    spywareblaster
    spywareblastersetup 34

but I suspect (can't recall) most (or all) of those above listed
files are downloaded (and not yet installed OR , I just "saved 'em" for
laughs (?)) files, and not installed files, or programs

    that)---will do so now

  46. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

OK---spyware blaster is installed in startup, program files (and also has a shortcut on my desktop---wow !! that was fast for over a MB

    run same now ??

    correction

"and one---", not "am one---", below

  48. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    Ok, run SpywareBlaster

    Click Updates

    Click Check for Updates

    click Enable All Protection

    close SpywareBlaster

  50. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Doesn't have to be in Startup just Start>>>Programs.
