Hi, I'm going to upgrade from Windows 98SE to Windows XP and I was wondering about something: I have a DOS program that's real important to me, and I'm wondering if I can run it in Windows XP. I have a custom machine thats 950 mHz, running Windows 98SE, with 5xx RAM, and lots of free space for stuff.

    Thank you,
    Susan.

XP has something similar to DOS, they call it a command prompt. Whether it will work or not, you're going to have to try it out. Some stuff works, some stuff doesn't. I don't know how to tell before trying it out. What is your application? Someone else may have used it before on XP.

I can say that GW-BASIC works. I've seen several games that don't.

Check out this program DOSBox. The link goes to the MG download page. It's a bit technical, but it is much more likly to work correctly than windows XP command prompt interface. One important feature is that it can slow down games that run too fast in windows.

Let us know how it works!

Thank You!!! Its written by my son (who's now in
California, working and also selling software he's written). I'm pretty sure it was written in GW-Basic, because it was written a long time ago, like when he was 14 and now he's in his 30s. The software download suggestion is also good. Thank you, again! I think I can do this.

If you can afford it, may I suggest that you buy a second hard drive and install XP on that. The Xp installation will prompt you to set up a dual boot system, just follow the prompts.

The Win98Se drive MUST be the first drive, though, for the dual boot to work correctly.
Safer than mucking about with conversions and partitioning, IMHO.

And guaranteed not to stuff up your olde DOS program.

I was planning on getting a new harddrive anyway-- you say Windows XP allows dual boot? Excellent! That makes a couple of things much easier. Thank you!

    You're very welcome, zoomchk. :)

Dual boot using W98SE and XP works well.
I had it on my old laptop, that ran 2 physical hard drives internally, at once.

Wish my new Toshiba had the same capability. :p

Fairly simple to install, just follow the prompts.

May I suggest that you buy XP Pro upgrade version. It is a lot cheaper than the full versions of XP Home or XP Pro. XP Pro has a few features, not available in XP Home.

Upgrade versions install easily as long as you already have W98Se on your PC, or have the genuine M$ CD available, if the install asks for it. Bazza

XP Pro upgrade version? Uhmm, ok. I'm definitly short of cash. If you think thats the right way to go..... Glad to know the Pro edition has what I need, though. I'm waiting for a check to clear. Wish me luck! I'd like to ask what else I'll need. Look for a further post sometime later. By the way, thanks!

You're welcome. :) Either upgrade version is the way to go, IMHO. saves lots of $$$$ or ££££, or whatever. The choice is yours.

The Pro upgrade and the Home upgrade are around the same price, so I chose the Pro version. Bazza
