Windows 98 won't start

I don't know what happened. It might have been to do with the fact that I didn't shut down properly, or it might have been virus related. All I know is that my computer is toast.

It was working perfectly until last night. I tried to turn it on, and it wouldn't get through ScanDisk. DOS mode seemed to work, but I have no idea how to use that. ScanDisk eventually gave me the following messages "missing or corrupted emm386.exe error in config.sys file on line 2" and "scandisk encountered a data error while reading the FAT entry for cluster 34824. This error prevents scandsik from fixing this drive". I didn't write anything down about the steps that I took to get these messages, but I can go try to start it up again if you guys need more specifics.

Thanks. I'm just glad the campus labs are open until 10pm most days or else I'd be completely screwed.

 

no floppy I'm afraid. I believe my friend used a CD to put win98 on there when he gave me the computer. I can get a win98 floppy if I need it though. I am computer illiterate I'm afraid, so I have no clue what to do at this point

 

am I able to reformat and such by using the CD? I've never reformatted before, so I don't know how to go about doing it. Can I do this from DOS mode? If there's a section on this site about it, can somebody point me to it? Thank you.
