Are the two non-boot hard drives internal or external?

So you created some folders as a user in windows 7 then removed windows 7 from one of the hard drives. Now you are trying to access these as a different user in a different version of windows?

You are aware that any programs (maybe that is what you mean by applications) have to be reinstalled, they can not be run from a backup on a hard drive or a burned backup disc.

When you were in Safe Mode in XP, I guess you took ownership of the folder. Did you mark the box for taking ownership of the subfolders and files--that should give you access to the .zip and .rar files?

    Hi Guys,
@plodr both of the hdd are internal only. and it wasn't a folder it was the 2nd hdd which had restricted access in 7. then the restriction was removed . also i copied my document folder to the 2nd hdd as a backup before formatting.

@sach2 i have booted the system in safe mode & taken full ownership of the 2nd hdd and yes it is applied to subfolders & files ;the hdd is accessible now with the old data accessible but the back up folder that i took from C:\...\My Documents is now that folder can't be copied all applications dont run u can rename or delete it bt cant copied or moved .zip or .rar files cant be read

    Thankx

So, you are having a problem taking ownership of the backup folder because that is what I think should give you access to those files?

@sach2 yes maybe that is the issue but since the whole hdd is under my ownership how are a few folders restricted?

is there any tool that resets the security features of the hdd in windows? if so plz let me know.
    Thankx

I'm just guessing that because they came from another OS they may have a different layer of protection. Try taking ownership of a specific folder and see if it gives you access. Make sure to add your own user name to the list of people with access rather than just Administrators group. And then give your self control.

I'm not really sure how it works. :(

It seems to be almost always the case when you back up the My Documents folder it is protected and you have to take ownership of the folder/files from the new OS.

I don't know if it would work but you could try making a new folder in the C:\ folder and then copying all the folders from within My Documents to the new D:\newfolder. Then perhaps they won't be protected when you move them over to the new OS.

I'm sorry that I don't have a better understanding of why sometimes there is a need to take ownership of old files from a new OS. I've never quite figured it out.
