    Hey all -
Well I have lurked here a few time but now I have an issue that Google nor Microsoft can explain how to fix right off.

So I got my new Toshiba laptop 13 days ago and Tuesday night I was ripping alot of my music onto it and the CD/DVD drive stopped reading the disks. So i turned it off and tride again the next morning and nothing so now I'm looking for help.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

but i have not found how to fix it in vista anywhere just xp.... Help?

    Thanks

I had not looked at that particular site but from the list they showed they don't offer any drivers that have to do with the CD/DVD drive....

    Hi

The easy fix if indeed its the Upper and Lower filters causing the problem can be found here (Vista registry fix is listed), download, unzip, and double click the registry fix.

May need in some instances to go into Device Manager and right click uninstall the CDROM after running the registry fix then reboot so Windows picks up the CDROM driver again.

No probs as XP been out longer than Vista, the top hits on search engines tend to be for XP, but glad Adryns posting worked and to be honest XP and Vista reg fix are the same, the filters didnt change location, but its always easier to list any fixes even if same with differing names for the various OSs, plus his clickable registry patches make it much easier to fix as manually doing it can be if not used to the registry as scary thing.

I did the whole palava with this one too. I wrote all about it on my blog - including the solution. I swear, it's easy.

Forget the registry editing and "guaranteed" fixes promised by programs. I have a toshiba satellite pro running vista and none of them worked for me in the slightest. Even the Toshiba website couldn't help - they didn't even list my model laptop among their driver downloads!

What DID work was a simple restart dropping into safe mode (press F8 as the laptop boots up) and then starting with last known good configuration.

    Whoala...success.

Seriously. If you want to know what I did and what didn't work, see http://pepspill.spaces.live.com I researched like a devil for this one and just NOBODY suggested a safe restart to last good config - not even mircrosoft! God knows why.

    Hi

While Last Known Good "may" work in some cases its not always going to as it relies on not having a successful boot or devices all working previously, if you have sucessful boots then that will be the saved restore point, which could also include a code 39 or 19 device errors as in CDROMs.

Using LKG, could in some instances cause another issue as while a driver maybe working fine, it maybe the cause of another issue which a new driver that was installed fixed, by running LKG you would be re-installing that "possible" faulty driver, thus adding back an issue as it restores the information keys in this registry location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet

Upper and Lower Filters and the deletion of these is a widely known fix and is not an OS issue but one thats added by in general a burning application and subsiquent removal or installing a new one and they conflict.

While LKG worked for you and glad it did, it doesnt work for many with this issue, which is why its not a common suggested fix.
