Originally I thought the problem was because I dislike MS’s auto updates, but having switch auto updates on the problem persists………..The problem is that (x) number of days go by then Windows Defender says its definitions need updating, go to MS update sight download updates they claim to install, but the Windows Defender notice is still in my desktop tray saying they are not installed, go back to Windows Update sight and they say I require the same update I just loaded, go to redownload and it says the update is there……………..argh:mad:  Last time I just redownloaded the entire Windows Defender package and that solved the problem for the (x) number of days.

Any ideas, before I do the MS sight search:eek:

    Thanks

I don't use windows defender but isn't that a program not written by microsoft?

You will need to update it by using an update box from with the program or going to their website.

As for MS updates always showing up even after downloading them have you rebooted?

Nope Windows Defender is in its Beta 2 edition at the MS sight and the downloads come from there.....PS I have also tried downloading updates from the program itself and the same result.

Yes I have rebooted after the update....still the same result

Side Note I am running Free AVG antivirus, but they claim at MS & AVG that there is no conflict, also do not get an AVG notice when I am uploading, nor one from Zone Alarm my firewall.

But hey Thanks for the input

    Some steps
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918355

but this one will most likely fix this issue for you, its a known bug,

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
    1. Remove the current signature file. To do this, click Start, click Run, type ( or copy and paste)

    Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

, and then click OK, it will ask you if you wish to un-install, say yes as it only uninstalls the update engine.

    2. Open Windows Defender.

    3. Check for new definitions. To do this, click the Help options arrow next to the Windows Defender Help icon, click About Windows Defender, and then click Check for Updates.

    and it should update :)

:) Thanks Halo worked like a charm, just hope I do not have to do that every (x) number of days , but time will tell.

Again Thanks for your time, and as always came through with the cure.:)

sadly you may have to, I havnt found a common denominator to this issue as it doesnt affect everyone, which leads me to suspect another security app causing this with its updates, as I have 2 PCs that are fine and one with that error, all running similar software apart from one which isnt running any major security apps at present and thats not the one with the problem.

MS beta testers to Defender are seeing similar and the bug is still active, so hopefully should be fixed by next major build update ( X fingers )

Possibles are or I suspect could be Ad-Aware or Avast, or something compleatly different like Windows Update as listed in the MSKB I posted :)
