   My o/s is Vista Home Premium - 64 bit
   
   My Windows Defender program has stopped working (no access or reference to same)
   A new stand alone install tells me this is not necessary because Vista will do it automatically - not!

   What other security software have you installed as some of them like Norton do disable Defender by default as you dont really need two malware scanners running, live/resident in background.
   
   Have you had malware infection lately btw?
   
   If you goto Security Center > Malware Protection can you re-enable Defender or what does it say in that area?
