Windows defender will not update

Unable to turn on windows defender in the security centre on my computer when I do this it try's to update but I get a message, no updates available, when I click OK windows defender is still showing OFF

This has been happening for a few weeks what am I doing wrong ?

When I click on windows defender it will scan OK.

Is windows defender & windows firewall any good, would I be better off getting some other realtime protection?

Running Vista

Got AVG anti virus and a-squared free version & spy blaster.

Problems with enabling Windows Defender in Vista may not be malware related. The only way we can really know that is by having you complete our standard cleaning procedures given in the below link:

It is possible that there are no current updates. Have you checked out pages like the below at Microsoft:

Keep Windows Defender definitions up to date

In short, they are better than nothing, but no they are not the best to use when you have other choices.
