Windows desktop vanished/usb ports not recognising devices

Hi there.
Just came from the Malware forum, a virus 'hid' my desktop.

Got rid of the malware, but desktop is still missing. Task Manager still works. Desktop programs still work, but you can only view/access them by going to task manager and picking 'New Task'.

After running programs such as combofix, right at the end I am told 'explorer.exe' is an invalid device or something.

My USB ports are no longer recognising my devices such as wireless adapter and memory sticks.

Went through some troubleshooting with another mod on the Malware board, first we ran chkdsk, then sfc /scannow. Halfway through the process of sfc scannow, it told me 'Files that are required for Windows to run properlymust be copied to the DLL cache. Please insert Windows XP professional service pack 3 CD now'

Since I don't have a windows CD, the mod referred me to this board and tol me to seek advice here.


Any help would be appreciated. Rather than paying 95 bucks for independant store to save everything off my hard drive, replace windows and then put it back on. (quoted price from them)

OS is Windows XP Media Center 2005

I have found it to be very good at correcting all kinds of GUI issues with XP computers. Especially check out the "Toolbox" tools. Also, the Microsoft Fix-it tools are worth a shot, though I have found they have a higher success rate with Vista and 7 based computers.
