First off, let's make sure what you mean here. Do you mean internet explorer 6? Its fairly unusual to say what version of windows explorer you have, and its a given that you have it if you are running Windows XP.

    sorry
this is not an internet problem
this occurs during normal pc use.
i just dont know what to do next.
its a real pain when it stops responding while trying to transfer files

This "appcompat.txt" is part of Windows Error Reporting (WER). I have problems myself with certain programs (like CCleaner that I downloaded from Major Geeks).

I went onto the Microsoft Knowledge Base and can't really find anything how to turn this off. It talks about being able to set options, etc. but doesn't tell you how to get in.

This program uses processes and memory to report errors in applications and the operating system to Microsoft (You get the message: "Send Error Report to Microsoft: Send Don't Send").

It's still a pain and I want to turn it off myself!

I'm going to go into XP Home Edition HELP and do a search there.

If I find anything, I'll let you know and please make that agreement reciprocal.

I DID go into XP Help and searched on "appcompat".

For the Microsoft KnowledgeBase entries, CLICK ON #4: "Description and availability of Internet Explorer Error Reporting" - it showed the whole story about WER (Windows Error Reporting) for Internet Explorer, including how to turn it off - which involves editing the Windows Registry.

CAUTION: If you have not done this before, read the recommended article on the registry FIRST!

As I said, this answer is for Internet Explorer Windows Error Reporting ONLY in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase -

    Go to the MiArticle ID:276550

Hope this helps - I'm STILL going to keep looking for how to turn this off for other applications, such as the disk cleanup program I downloaded from Major Geeks: CClean.exe, which when I ran "Analyze" - gave me the error message and under details I found that "appcompat.txt" was the problem.

IMPORTANT: YOU CANNOT SIMPLY ERASE THIS TEXT FILE JUST BECAUSE ITS IN A TEMP DIRECTORY - IT CONTAINS DATA/INFORMATION USED BY THE WINDOWS ERROR REPORTING TOOL.
