Hi, I've had this problem for almost a week, and I've tried all the different spyware scans and virus removal tools I've used in the past, and nothing has fixed the problem, so I need help. It isn't a debilitating problem, because I can work around it, but it is a major pain.

Here's the problem. It seems that whenever I try to play most video files, media player has an error that requires it to close, and shortly after windows explorer has an error that requires it to close. Whenever I open a folder with video files that are in thumbnail mode, windows explorer has an error. Whenever I right-click on the files to open in another program or change properties, windows explorer gives me the error "Data Execution Prevention: To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program. Windows Explorer." I am still able to play the files and change the properties, but the error keeps coming up, and causes the desktop to refresh, etc. This error also occurs whenever I try to access files on a disc, or my external hard-drive. This error never happens for anything except video files. Anything else (audio, text, exe) work fine. Also, twice, the Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger error has come up, which causes the computer to lock up entirely. I tried researching the problem, and it seemed that the only thing that causes the Dr. Watson error is the Acebot trojan, and although some of the symptoms seemed to coincide with the description, I don't think it is the problem because the error only came up twice, probably due to the other errors, and windows just doing what it does best, messing up. I have done all the scans that I have used in the past to fix problems, and also tried many new ones based on other forums I have read, but I have run out of sources and I really need an "expert" opinion.

I have scanned with the following programs:

Spybot S&D: Found the usual spyware I always get just from normal web-surfing, and one suspicious win32 file which it got rid of, but the problem didn't stop.

Ad-Aware SE: Just found the usual tracking cookies, nothing special

    Norton Anti-virus: No problems found

    AVG Anti-Virus: No problems found

    Trojan Hunter: No problems found

    Panda Activescan: No Problems found

Trend-Micro Housecall: Minor spyware found and fixed

RegScrubXP: 147 problems that were fixed, still didn't fix the original problem.

AboutBuster: Found a few errors that were fixed (Log Attached)

Hijack This: Attached is my latest log, and I would really appreciate someone taking a look at it and hopefully find the solution to this problem (without resorting to re-installing windows) Thanks. Major Geeks has helped me in the past, hopefully it will help me again.

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Based on the description of your problems, I tend to doubt it is a malware problem. The only true way to know is to have you running are standard cleaning procedure that I will give below. BUT FIRST, you must uninstall one of your antivirus programs. You have AVG and Symantec installed. One must go now (preferably Symantec).

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, renaming, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.
    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy. - only for Windows XP, 2K, & NT users
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

I would like to sincerely thank you for the reply, and I would also like to say the the problem is solved :) Thanks to you I was able to safely determine that the problem was not due to malware, it was simply a system problem. And logically, system problems should be able to be solved by using a system restore point a day or 2 before the problem started. I did it, and it is working fine. I'd like to thank you again. If nothing else, I now have new additions to my toolbox of malware removal programs.
