I am running Win 8.1 Pro with FireFox. Starting a couple of days ago Windows Explorer has slowed way down when copying files. I am talking about speeds of 5 KBS. It used to be around 30MPS. Does anybody have a fix or advice or anything? Thank you very much.

You left out quite a few details. Copying from what to what? All files or files of a certain size?
Once those questions are answered, I may have more questions.

Thank you Plodr. I know I was brief because I wanted to get some guidance on what to include.

Copying or moving can be one folder from/to another folder on the internal hard drive or from/to one external drive to the internal hard drive or from/to two external drives. In other words all kinds of copying for source and destination.

The slowness is apparant in copying more than four or five files, i.e., complete folders. For example what used to be a back up copy of changed files in a folder (copying the entire folder) from the internal drive to an external drive that would take say five minutes now can take over an hour. And the files range in number and size from a few bytes to several megabytes.

I have restarted the computer, run several different clean up programs such as Advanced System Care, checked error logs, scanned for malware and viuses, etc. Nothing stands out. I am of the opinion that my Windows Explorer has somehow been damaged but I do not know how to replace it.

Again thank you for your help.

If you have a bunch of tabs open FireFox will use a ton of resources. I've had similar issues, try this https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/latencymon.html
The other thing was I had very high system interrupts in task manager. Rebooting helps, I leave this PC on 24/7. If you think systems files are messed up run (SFC /scannow) the system file checker for Windows.

Since 8.1 is still getting security updates, have you noticed the slowdown in the last month? If so, it might be caused by a Windows update.

Open Task Manager and list the 3 items that are using the most CPUs. Perhaps that will give a clue about anything that might be using excessive CPUs which would cause a slowdown on any other process. (When malwarebytes runs its weekly scan, it seems it takes a long time for me to open my browser, even though mbam isn't using all the CPUs.)
