Windows Explorer terminates randomally and will restart after some period of time. The time for restart varies.

The problems started a few days ago when my Internet access slowed to a crawl. After checking three other systems on my LAN and finding access via any one of them was ok, I started trying to find the problem with the one system. After trying several programs and seeing no improvement I then began to see the random Windows Explorer shutdown. Any program that was running continues to run but the desktop is blank (just the background remains). I finally stumbled onto this forum.

I have followed the instructions under Windows XP Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure.

I have attached the five requested log files. I am looking forward to your reply.

    Thanks, Gary

Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
When it opens, press the Scan button
Now click the Files/folders tab and locate these detections:

    • ¤¤¤ Particular Files / Folders: ¤¤¤
      [Faked.Drv][FILE] 33333812.sys : C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\33333812.sys [-] --> FOUND

Place a checkmark each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
Do not reboot your computer yet.

Now rerun Hitman and have it fix all that it found.

Reboot and rescan with both RogueKiller and Hitman and attach those logs as well.

Be sure to tell me how things are running now.

    Many thanks to Tim W!

No more Windows Explorer terminations and my Internet connect speed is back to normal.

Your reply was quick and the instructions couldn't have been easier to follow.

I have attached the log files generated. I notice that Hitman didn't appear to generate a new log so I'm not sure what happened there or if that is important.

    Regards,
    Gary

Use windows explorer to find and delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\33333812.sys

Reboot and rescan with RogueKiller and attach the new log.

Deleted 33333812.sys (there was also a second copy with the ext. .dump). I left that one.

    Rebooted and ran Rogue Killer.

    The log is attached.

    Thanks.

    Ok, looks good.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

I have followed all your recommendations. Also, I won't be downloading any Codecs from anywhere except here in the future as I suspect that is where my problem began. :)

The price for your services is hard to beat!

    Thanks again!
