Windows Fireall Will Not Start

    I am not able to start Windows Fireall.

    When launching Windows Firewall, the dialog box instructs to "update firewall settings". When I try (selecting "use recommended settings" button) I receive "Windows Firewall can't change some of your settings Error code 0x80070424"

    When I try to start through the services utility, I run as administrator and it shows "services local". However, there is no Windows Firewall service item.

    I tried the Microsoft Fixit utility, but it did not work either

    I forgot to mention, the OS is Windows 7

    Then try this http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows7/Restore-Windows-Firewall-settings

    If both fail, you might be infected. Head over to malware.

    yes, I did try those suggestions, but they were not successful.

    There was some malware, but even after removal it did not solve the problem. I will also post to the malware forum, but I suspect the problem is not malware.

    Did you have Windows 7 Antispyware 2012 (FakeAV)?

    This one is breaking the Windows 7 firewall by deleting the following services from the registry:
    • BFE (Base Filtering Engine)
    • MpsSvc (Windows Firewall)
    • mpsdrv (Windows Firewall Authorization Driver)
