After being on the phone for 2 hours with microsoft tech level 2. Downloaded Service Manager v3.1 and ran it the tech informed me that my firewall files were missing and were probably wiped clean when I had a virus and cleaned my computer. I went into services and ran down the list comparing with what is suppose to be on my computer and I am missing. Windows Security Center(but it is on my computer because I can open it) Windows defender (says not installed when I click on it after searching in windows start)And Base filtering engine

The tech said I need to do a factory reset. My questions are.
    1) Do I need to worry about this if I have a firewall on my computer from Mcafee

2)Can I get the files that are missing from another computer and copy them to mine.

    3) If the answer to #2 is yes where can I find the files for this.

I've been following your thread here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=248308

I have the identical problem. Had the Win 7 Security 2012 fakealert virus. I pulled the hard drive and connected it to another computer. I scanned it with Security Essentials, which detected and removed Win32/Obfuscator.TT, Win32/Sirefef.J and Win32/FakeRean. I ran Malwarebytes which cleaned up a few minor things. I have also thrown Superantispyware at it.

I believe that McAfee's firewall is not operating properly. On McAfee's home screen it says "Firewall: On", but if I select it and go to Settings, it then shows it is off, and refuses to turn on. I am entirely missing the Base Filtering Engine, Windows Security Center and Windows Defender services also. I suspect McAfee's firewall relies on one or more of them.

I may end up having to wipe and reinstall Windows, but I don't want to, as this seems like an otherwise clean install!

Just checked my mcafee settings I have the same thing. I also just got a redirect from IE and a popup mevo virus. I am going to run the suggested virus scan from major geeks site.

I've already run Superantispyware. Seeing as you've got signs of lingering malware (which I haven't seen yet), I think I had better just reformat. I already have too much time invested in cleaning this system!

McAfee Stinger is good to follow up after you've tried Mbam and SAS.Can't hurt, you might reformat anyway!!!!!
