    I have XP sp2 and the firewall has allways been turned on now it is off and I cant turn it back on. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also I have downloaded the Microsoft antispyware beta program Iam thinking that might be the reason but Iam not sure.

    Why can't you turn it back on. Give us somthing to work with. What is preventing you from turning it on.

    When I try to turn on the Firewall in the Control Panel I click on the general Firewall tab and it says this. Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing(ICS)Service. YES or NO? I click YES and it does not let me connect to the Windows Firewall/ICS. If I try to turn on the Firewall through the security center in the control panel it tells me that I have to go to the general Firewall tab in the Control Panel. So it's a big circle.

    Try a winsock fix. At a command prompt, type: netsh winsock reset Press Enter. Wait for it to finish and reboot.

    Sounds like a service isnt running to me...

    Go start -> run -> type services.msc

    make sure that the following services are set to automatic, and are started (right click and properties to change their status)
    Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing
    COM+ event system

    Try enabling the firewall again.

    I have done what you have suggested except when I attempted to change the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing to start I recived a error message. Error 10047: An address incompatible with the requested protcol was used. So I could not change it from stoped to start. Could you give me other suggestions or solutions? Thanks for the help so far.

    Did you recently run M$ new Anti-spyware app? It recently borked the Windows Firewall for a user in the Spyware Forum.

    Just a thought. . .

    PP :)

    EDIT:
    .........And I just read your 1st post . . . . . :)

    Adryn, PhilliePhan,

    I wish we would hear back from Shyster. I would like to know the answers to both of your questions for future reference.

    My concern is, that a winsock reset might not be the ideal or only solution. Should it resolve this problem everytime or are there other factors involved that maybe we need to know before suggesting something.

    I'm sure there are others who would be interested. Thank's :)
