    I have:
Windows 2k SP4 and i want to stop videos and mp3's from playing in the folder.

You know the player that appears in the left of the folder when you highlight the video/mp3 file.

How do i turn this off?

while in the folder, goto tools/folder options. the first option is to turn off common tasks by selecting classic windows folders. that will eliminate that from happening. but will also close the left side of the folder.

What you are talking about is the "Media" bar. Try this:

To prevent Internet Explorer from playing Web media in the Media bar:
1.Open Internet Explorer, and then click Media on the toolbar.
2.At the bottom of the Media bar, click Media Options, click Settings, and then click to clear the Play Web media in the bar check box.

I looked at my other computer that still has IE6 on it, and it does not show the window, so that has me stumped. I would suggest looking at the settings for media and go from there.

To clarify, when you double click a media file inside a folder (not in a browser) the media file plays in a little player inside the folder rather than opening windows media player separately?

Try this and see if it helps:
Open internet explorer and go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and look for the Multimedia heading. Uncheck the box that says Play Sounds in Webpage, and Play Video in Webpage.

Also when you go to folder options with a folder open, is the button "launch folder windows in a separate process" checked? If it is, uncheck it.

Let us know if either of those solve the issue. I've never experienced this myself. I get a little preview of the media player over there, but when I actually play the file it opens in the media program.

I thought of another thing, is there a setting for "Autoplay" in the in the media settings for Radio, or media bar.

U guys are talking about internet explorer.

Im talking about normal windows folders.

When i highlight a music/video file the player(shown in image above) appears.

This is annoying as it takes processing time and annoys me when im trying to look through some files.

Explorer is a part of Internet Explorer. Has been since Win98. It is just that with Win2k, it is not embedded as part of the OS. Just hilighting will not play a media file, unless you are clicking on the file.

What WMP do you have installed on the system?

Do you see the image above.

When i highlight any media file that shows up in my sidebar.

This player as you can see alows me to play the file without opening any external programs.

The image has nothing to do with the question. That is normal with IE6 and Explorer windows. Going back to the original question, have you looked through the settings that I pointed you towards, or even looked at the possibility of "Auto Play" settings in maybe a Registry Tweak that you may of applied.

The media window normally does not "Auto Play" media files, without something being done by the end user (ie clicking file, or tweak). Otherwise, you can go through the File & Folder settings for the File extensions and change them to run in another program, or remove WMP.

To make things easy, go into Internet Explorer, and check the settings in Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab, scroll down to "Multimedia", and check the setting for "Don't display media content in Media bar".

Your problem is due to the way Internet Explorer 6.x incorporates everything, and it pretty much becomes a part of the OS when loaded (same with 5.x), and that is how explorer.exe works.

I tried all the suggestions and nothing has changed.

Then most likely you will have to dig deeper, due to the information I got is all I can find.

I'm still not sure if you're saying the file is automatically playing inside the folder when you click on it, or if you're just aggravated by the preview.

    In either case, try this:

Open up a folder, any folder
Choose Tools > Folder Options > General. Put a tick mark in the option "Use Windows Classic Folder"

Also put a tick mark in the option "Double Click to Open an Item" if there isn't one already.

    Choose Apply
Go to the View Tab and Push the "Like This Folder" button
    Choose OK

Please let me know how this works for you.
