Windows goes into standby, no reason

Sorry Im not sure if this is the correct section. Let me try to explain my situation the best I can.

For the past 4 weeks. I have had a strange problem, where, my screen will fade black, and go into sleep mode. I will hear the log off sound from windows, my computer sits there for like 5 seconds. And appears to power off. After waiting about a minute, i turn it back on. Only to have it get back to the background, and instantly power off....now after waiting a few more minutes, i power it back on. And everything is fine... But this has happened about 6 times in the past few weeks and its worrying me.

Does anybody know how, or why this is happening? and maybe a possible fix. If possible at all.

Thanks, in advance for any help.

    Greetings, disk00.

What operating system and Service Pack # are you using, and what's the make and model # of your machine?

I'm assuming you've checked your Power Management, made sure any power saving and Hibernation and/or Sleep modes have been disabled?

I just went into my power management settings. I turned off every form of sleep i could find. The only sleep that was turned on, was Hybrid sleep mode. I turned that off but im not sure if thats the solution.

I and using Windows 7 Gamer Edition x64 ( its a modded version, so i wouldnt be suprised if that was part of the cause) Replaced my Home Edition with this one because my home edition was giving me issues.

My pc is a custom built machine. EVGA nForce 610i (mobo) and a Sunbeam 680w PSU, Intel quad core q6660 i think... 2.39ghz

    Re: Possible PSU problem?

    Greetings, disk00.

Hardware-wise, you might check any temps you can, either by using native Windows and/or BIOS flags, or by using a program such as SpeedFan.

If, for example, your processor is running at borderline high temperature, BIOS safeguards may be cutting in, shutting down the system temporarily.

    Re: Possible PSU problem?

( lol replying from 2 different threads...)

Well I got EVGA Precision, which i use for my graphics card, to control fan speeds and such. But other then that, I don't really think its a heat problem. I've never had a problem untill just recently.

I can see where this could become confusing very quickly, trying to discern if this is a hardware or software problem (I just posted to your related hardware thread).

You might try this to cut the troubleshooting in half: download and burn a live Linux distro, such as Mint or Ubuntu, boot to that disk and run the machine through its paces. That should help us decide which route to take.

Hmmm...sadly I don't think I have any blanks to burn and discs. I'll have to look.

By the way, when i say random. I mean it. Last week, it happend to me about 3 times. Now, this week its only happened one time, and that was about an hour ago. Its very random, and a couple times I wasn't doing anything really other than talking to my girlfriend on AIM. Then sometimes, ill be playing a very taxxing computer game, such as Lost planet 2 , or Metro 2033, very high requirements, and i played them for a few hours each and no problem. But then, as i said. Other times it just goes poof....random indeed..

Sorry to respond twice. I think i will try WUbi ( I think its called that?) it installs ubuntu alongside windows, as far as i read. so i can just boot up to THAT instead of using windows 7. But...it could take a full week to know if its windows causing the problem, or my hardware, as i stated...its completely random sometimes.

Unfortunately, intermittent problems like this can be amongst the hardest problems to troubleshoot.

If and when you do see the symptoms again, check your Event Viewer for any flags at or near the time of the crash.

Well, i did install the ubuntu thing i mentioned before. It was a bust. Wont boot up, and now windows 7 takes 5 full minutes to boot up fully. I may format, and use my NORMAL windows 7 x64 install.

Merged into one thread, can become confusing to all having multiple threads on the same topic.

    Cheers.

I would re-format using a "normal" aka proper version of Windows 7 as there is not such thing as a Gamer Version in the SKU lineup of versions, sadly modded versions (unless you create yoru own custom version off the original DVD) can miss vital components out in the quest to slim it down, as the creators of these hooky versions dont actually know what your PC hardware and the apps you run may need from the system files.

Thank you for merging them. sorry to post 2 threads.

I have now installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 ( legitimate copy)

I will see how this goes, and get back to you guys at a later date. Either in this thread, or in a new one.

And might as well mention this. When I tried to install the ubuntu thing. I noticed my windows OS took like almost 5 minutes to fully start, from the " Starting windows" and the little animation, till background and stuff is loaded. I am STILL having this problem... so, augh, another problem.

    Hi

Great on the re-install of legit Win7 x64, yes do let us know how you get on and in this thread would be good as we will have the background info as to whats been suggested so far, a chain of events is always crucial in PC troubleshooting.

How did you try and install Ubuntu, did you not just run it from the Live CD or did you try and Dual Boot (as in install Ubuntu as a second OS alongside Windows)? possible if its hanging at boot and you did try and dual boot Windows and Ubuntu is that you have a startup entry in the bootloader.

So far so good. I haven't had that happen just yet. I'm not playing with any settings, or customizing anything for a while. Hopefully to find out what the crap is wrong.

I formatted my drive completely. Ubuntu is no longer there. But I still get a longggg hangtime when windows goes from the " Starting windows" to the login screen.

    OH AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS~
Or merry Christmas is your awesome~

been a whole day. No problems. IT DID shut down on me, but, it actually shut down the way its suposed to, instead of completely randomly fading out and shutting off. Though i think it shut down due to an update...but still weird because there was no warning.

Nevermind, it just did it again to me. Same thing. For no reason, the screen fades out. I hear the log out sound. then it turns off. A minute later, i turn it back on, only to instantly see my background picture...then after about 30 seconds. it powers off completely. Then after it works just fine for almost 24 hours then it does it to me again. ( could this be something i could avoid by turning my computer off more often....?)

    Double post...meh

I will try changing my power settings to turn off ALL forms of sleep/hibernate. I doubt that will help, since i did that with my last install of Windows 7.

( wishes i could edit my previous post)

I got the NoSleep program from your site. I wonder if that might be a good temp fix for now. Because its not like the comp just cuts off. It really fades out, and goes into hibernate i think.

I think i have solved the problem. Or atleast, figured out a way to stop it.

When I have "Dontsleep" Turned on, everytime it trys to...auto shut off or go into standby, it brings up the " Windows cannot shut down till these apps are turned off" Then i just hit cancel and it just continues on like normal :)

    Strange problem.

Just curious - have you looked in BIOS to see if there are any hibernate or sleep settings?

  22. disk00

    Actually I haven't done that...do you think i should?
