Windows Installer / Blackberry Desktop Manager

In addition to the issue I'm having with Firefox as discussed on the Malware Removal Forum <http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=205642>, now when I start up, and again when I open Blackberry Desktop Manager (DTM) and try to sync my Blackberry w/ Outlook, the Windows Installer (WinInstlr) pops up and tries to install TurboTax ItsDeductible 2006. And as a result(?), DTM basically freezes -- I can't even start a sync (or do anything else w/ DTM, except close it). So:

The issue is similar to that discussed here: <http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=92779>. Upon reading Matacumbie's fix for writermom, I unchecked several items on the startup tab of msconfig (specifically: Windows Installer, and a bunch of stuff I don't need hogging startup resources -- Adobe, AT&T/BellSouth (ISP) "help", iTunesHelper, Roxio & Sonic updaters, Symantec (I had Norton @ one time but now use Comodo IS). Intriguingly, perhaps on an aside, there is a checked box next to a nameless, commandless startup item...I left that one alone).

I rebooted, and the WinInstlr pop-up DID pop-up, but it only flashed and went away. When I then opened DTM, again WinInstlr flashed/disappeared. But I was able to sync -- to a point. During the subsequent sync, DTM "encountered a problem and had to close".

This is a relatively new development -- it's been a good while since I've had an issue with DTM, and I've never had the automatic WinInstlr issue...I have no idea what's triggered it or how to stop it. Please help!

Also, there's a conflict with using msconfig to control startups, as I noted in my thread on the Malware Removal Forum. So Matacumbie's fix for writermom apparently is a band-aid, whereas I need stitches... Can anyone help resolve this "(do not) use msconfig to control startups" conflict?

    Thanks -- HC

    Greetings, HardCorps...

I think it's pretty much accepted around here to use CCleaner and/or Startup CPL to manage the startup group...

As far as the Blackberry DTM, I'm not familiar with it, but my first thought would be to uninstall/reinstall the software...

You will need to uninstall Turbo Tax. You can then reinstall it. Its a broken installation, and any program that uses Windows Installer that is launched will most likely bring up the same issue.

Let us know if you cannot uninstall/reinstall.

Since I won't miss that old version of TurboTax, I removed it; no need to reinstall. The problem appears to be resolved. What causes a problem like this to all of the sudden occur out of the blue like that?

If DTM causes me any more problems, I'll try the uninstall/reinstall route if it looks like it warrants it.

There's still a conflict regarding controlling startups via the use of msconfig and programs like CCleaner that use msconfig between 1) what chaslang says here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 and here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=149804 and 2) what Major Attitude says here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=106650. And it sounds like it's a big deal!

    Thanks for your help!

Glad you got the installer issue sorted, HC - and thx for the feedback...

As far as the startups quandary, there does seem to be quite a lot of confusion on the subject - if you really dig deeply, you'll find many contradictions about basic Windows-related functions: startups, partitions, swapfiles, etc....

The bottom line: use these discussions and differences of opinions to form your own conclusions, and coupled with common sense and personal experience, chances are you'll have a happy computing experience...

    Good luck!

The reason it happened? A component that Turbo Tax relied on was changed, either removed or updated. This caused Turbo Tax to break. This in turn caused other issues down the line.

I can pretty much guarantee you it happened due to a adobe flash update.

Sadly, I have had issues fixing computers with broken Intuit software before, and this was the cause then, as well.
