windows installer corrupted

Hi, my xp is all screwed up i think. Norton can't update and neither can windows update. I get there and it scans for updates, finds sp2 update, but when it starts to download, it just says download failed. I also found i am unable to uninstall prgms with the windows installer. It says i may be in safe mode (i'm not) or a virus, (not) I did a system restore, booted in safe mode, nothing seems to help. somehow i suppose my registry got corrupted. Make sure your Background Intelligent Transfer Service is Started and Automatic that should take care of the Windows Update issue.

Uninstall and Reinstall your Windows Installer.

Norton sounds like a Live Update issue, but may work once BITS is started.

 

can you tell me exactly how to do that? I did read about BITS, but i couldn't figure out how to add it to the registry

 

also when i go into my system info, its says "can't collect system information, a network error occured in connecting to windows management instrumentation. encure that your network connection is functioning properly."

 

goto start>control panel>admin tools>services BITS should be on that list .. just right click it and select start

 

hey thanks! that worked, its installing sp2, maybe that will fix the networking errors!

 

Make sure you change the startup type to Automatic so it starts when Windows boots.
Start > Run > Services.msc

 

thanks tons! i went back and set it to auto, then i was able to finally download sp2 and install it, that fixed everything!! glad i didn't have to do a clean install of windows! I've done that before...I'd rather stick to being a florist! thanks again.
