When I try to download from majorgeeks i.e. the window installer stops and I get the message "running safe mode or WI not installed correctly" can I fix this without a CD? I am humbly grateful for any help.

Which windows version and service pack you have installed?

If XP which I guess you are using are you when downloading saving the file or choosing to run directly once downloaded?

Are you logged in as Admin?

Is the error message code 1719?
If that is the error code then follow this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q315346 ( note: part of this involves editing the registry so backup all your important files and data first and also export the registry key your about to edit by right clicking its folder and choosing export.. do read the Microsoft warning about the registry on that page before attempting )

Sorry, cut and paste didn't work so well.

unregister, and then re-register Windows Installer
    1. Click "Start", and then click "Run".
    2. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /unregister" (without the quotation marks), and then click "OK".
    3. Click "Start", and then click "Run".
    4. In the "Open" box, type "msiexec /regserver" (without the quotation marks), and then click "OK".

Try unregistering then re-register Windows installer

In the Run box, type: msiexec /unregister Press okay

In the Run box, type: msiexec /regserver

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the problem.

In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :

    net stop wuauserv

    Repeat for the following:
    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll
    regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
    regsvr32 qmgr.dll
    regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll

    net start wuauserv

What fixed my problem was replacing the missing registry keys.

Remember to back-up your registry first! (I didn't once, man did I pay for it)
