Windows Keep Crashing Even After Clean Installing Win10 (had The Same Problem With Win7 Before This)

Dear all,

Ran automatic updates on my Windows 7 and installed everything it told me to. However, after the updates my windows keep crashing after a few minutes from start up.
I even tried booting up Ubuntu so i can back up my files but it still crashes after a few minutes.

Ran out of options so i did a clean reinstall to Windows 10 and the same problem reoccurs.

Is this a software or hardware problem? Could it be my HDD (which is more than 6 yrs old) is dying?

What shall I do next?

If it's crashing when you boot from Ubuntu it isn't a Windows problem. Hardware trumps software, ensure the hardware is fully functional and correctly fitted.

Yes, a bad HDD would normally be one of the first suspects, it would need to be checked and tested whilst connected to a clean, known good PC. Booting from a Live Ubuntu/Linux CD/DVD/USB might allow you to run some basic read-only disk checks.

 

I managed to connect the HDD to another PC and succesfully backed up my important files.

Any advice on how to check the HDD on a good pc?

 

From Windows Explorer highlight the suspect drive, right-click it > Properties > Tools tab and select the top button, Check Now.

Use the maker's diagnostics like SeaTools, check the SMART stats with at least 2x different tools (I use Hard Disk Sentinel, it has a Trial version), more drive tools here.
