Hi anybody; I have a new HP Pavilion Elite computer with Windows 7 home premium, intel I5 cpu, 8gigs of ram.

Ialso have my old XP system on the computer, using bootit ng to dual boot.

I migrated all my programs from xp to win7 using PCmover pro.

Windows live mail comes up fine, has all my emails - but it won't access the internet.

googling this says I need an update , so I download and try to run it, but windows live installer also says it can't find the internet.

I have given wlm a pass in the windows firewall, made sure I'm logged in as administrator, tried turning off the firewall, but always the same result.

the installer error code is 0x8104000b, while clicking on sync in wlm gives
    0x800ccc0e.

i downloaded your hijackthis, and ran it, but got some strange error messages, but still ended up with a log. don't know if that will be helpful or not.

don't know if it is connected, but Firefox 3.6.3 also cannot see the internet.
jit gives "unable to connect" for any url I enter.
have checked all the different solutions given at ff support. no joy.

hoping someone has an answer for this, and thanks in advance,

    Vern

hello again people, thanks for taking the time to see if you can be of any help.

re my last paragraph above, today I downloaded Opera, it gave a message about being restricted by windows firewall, then added itself to be allowed - I checked to see it was there - and now it also will not access the internet.

checking settings in wlm, I see it says that wlm shares internet settings with IE, yet it gives 'unable to connect to the server' where IE has no problem at all.

also, yesterday I mentioned PCMOVER pro migrated all my programs.

pcm stated that it migrated some 795000 settings from XP to win7.

if anyone has any familiarity with that program , do you think it might be possible there is some SETTING that could be causing this problem ?

I have dealt with many software problems and resolved them via google and other online help, but this one is bamboozling me.

    TIA,

    Vern

OK, now I downloaded a new email client, foxmail, set it up, and it too cannot contact the server. YOIKS!!

could it have something to do with ports ?

If the computer can not get on the internet in IE and FF, then email programs won't work.
How do you connect to the internet? Can the XP side get on?
On the Win 7 side, what security programs are installed?

    hello, plodr, thanks for replying.

by your first sentence you seem to think I am a computer newbie who might think he could still get email while no other internet access was available.

I am not a comupter newbie, but have been using them since 1981, starting with a 16k Apple II.

I am technically oriented as far as software is concerned.
for example, I use taskinfo to keep a constant eye on what processes are running and using cpu in my system. also as I mentioned I have been using bootit ng since I upgraded from 98 to XP, to dual boot, image my system to ext hd, define and generally massage partitions.

in my working career I was a mainframe systems programmer and tech support.

perhaps I did not state specifically that IE is working fine.

I can also ping sites from a dosbox.

I connect to the internet via teksavvy, a 5mb/s service; it is a DSL connection using a speedtouch modem. the network adapter is a "realtek PCIe GBE family controller".

everything works normally on the XP side.

in Win7 the Windows firewall is running, and microsoft security essentials for antivirus. MSE is able to access the internet, since it states its updates are 'up to date'.

I do have Zone alarm pro on XP, but have not decied yet whether I need it on Win7.

as you have noticed, I have not been sitting back waiting for an answer, but have been continuing to try different things.

I just don't get it that IE works, but neither Firefox nor Opera can access the internet. I haven't tried Chrome yet.

I think I have answered all your questions; I will be happy if you will continue to work with me to get this resolved.
I would not be here unless I had exhausted all my resources.

    regards,

    Vern

here is the exact error display WLM gives for all 3 email addresses:

Unable to send or receive messages for the mail.deguerre.ca account. The connection to the server has failed.

    Server: 'mail.deguerre.ca'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
    Protocol: POP3
    Port: 110
    Secure(SSL): No

Hello again, plodr and anyone else interested.

just downloaded chrome to my win7 system, where IE works, but no other browsers will.

the installer could not access the internet, and gave a web page with a list of possible causes.

first was to add google updater to the firewall allowed programs.
    I did that.

another one that I hadn't seen before was to check the BITS service was set to automatic or manual.
I saw it was set to automatic(delayed start), so changed it to automatc.

neither of these made a difference, so I used the 'alternate install' link, and when chrome started, it couldn't access the internet. !!! @#$%%^...

here is the error message: Error 10 (net::ERR_ACCESS_DENIED): Unknown error.

hoping the more info you have, the more quickly we can get this resolved.

    TIA,

    Vern

Just to be clear, you can fire up IE and get to the MajorGeeks site. Correct?

I'm not interested in what MSE says - it might be lying (if you have no internet connection, it might simply state "up to date"; I don't have it installed so I'm not familiar with its behavior).

    nope. still the same.

Unable to send or receive messages for the mail.teksavvy.com account. The connection to the server has failed.

    Server: 'mail.teksavvy.com'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E
    Protocol: POP3
    Port: 995
    Secure(SSL): Yes
    Socket Error: 10013

please explain why I would need SSL ? it has never been on before.

    thanks for keeping at this!

WOW! I ran the system in safe mode, and EVERYTHING works!

    firefox, chrome, and opera all come up normally;

WLM didn't work the first time, so I switched off SSL, and set the ports back to 25 and 110, and it works sending and receiving!

back in normal mode, when I click start/getting started/discover windows 7 , IT fails with the same error message previously mentioned I got when starting Chrome, Error 10 (net::ERR_ACCESS_DENIED): Unknown error.
(but it starts fine in safe mode)

the same error occurs for other 'getting started' choices.

so now, safe mode has proved that it is something running in normal mode that is causing the problem ?

I copied the running processes from taskmanager to clipboard, used irfanview to convert to jpg, but the 'insert image' function here wants a url, not a local file.

if it would be helpful to see the running processes, please let me know how I can paste or copy it here.

    thanks,

    Vern

Unfortunately, I do not have the time to look at an account with 72 processes running and tell you what to stop, all in under 24 hours! Sometimes life interferes.

I will get to the processes a bit at a time.

Hi, Iguess you mistook my meaning.

I was just concerned that the list hadn't been posted after 24 hours.

really appreciate your patient assistance, and while I would love to get this fixed,
there is no rush, since I am getting my mail online in the interim.

    regards,

    Vern

    Yes, I did. Sorry. :-o

    First screen:
Turn off Adobe Flash Player helper. Flash will play fine when needed without this helper always running in the background.

    Turn off CCC.exe
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/libraries/process/i/CCC.exe.html

Turn off Google Installer (it is an updater always running)

    Turn off hpwuSchd Application
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/libraries/process/i/hpwuschd.exe.html

    Turn off jusched.exe

To stop these programs from running at startup, you can use something like
    http://majorgeeks.com/Startup_Control_Panel_Standalone_Version_d4359.html
I believe this standalone version will work in Windows 7.
If it doesn't, WinPatrol (free) will work.
    http://majorgeeks.com/WinPatrol_d3380.html

I'll get to the next screen tomorrow or Friday. ;)

I did all those, situation still the same.

would a shorter list of just 'vern' stuff give you less of a headache ? :)

    The other two pages:
    Disable MOM.exe
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/libraries/process/i/MOM.EXE.html

    qt2009.exe
I really don't see the need to have QuickTax load on startup. Disable it and make a note. If you notice a problem, then enable it again.

    Did you buy task info?
    http://www.iarsn.com/
I haven't been able to find much on it.

tbnote.exe doesn't have to run at startup unless you use it alot; in which case, it will be a pain to enable it most of the time after the computer boots.

wmpnetwk unless you share your media files with other computers, this doesn't need to run at startup.

I still don't know enough about Windows 7 to be sure what MS services you can safely set to manual, from automatic but I know the best place to look for the information.
    http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/servicecfg.htm
Make sure your services match his suggestions.

Plodr, another very odd thing that I don't know if it could be connected-

windows update is set to automatic, which I haven't got around to changing yet -

    and every night it tries to install KB953297, net.framework service pack 1;
    and every night it fails!

it always gives error 2, and when I click for info, it talks about language packs.

    other updates are all successful.

    hard to figure...

For whatever reason (even MS doesn't always know) certain updates fail.

I had one similar (I think it was .NET2 something). I went to MS site, selected custom and scrolled to the update in question and the + in front. I selected, do not show me this update again. I'm not sure if this can be done with auto updates but I think it can. I used this so people would not get IE 8 shoved on the computer until they were ready to update.

Put this on google "KB953297 fails" and you will see you are not alone with the repeated failure of this to install.
If I find a solution, other than removing all >NET items, I'll post it.

yeah, I saw the tons of hits on that. it seems as though it's not a *new* update either - been around for quite a while. thanks for checking into it.

in the meantime, I did an experiment - disabled ALL startups except windows operating system, in msconfig.

started firefox and wlm - result still the same.

so now we have a shorter list to work with. I have 2 images in Word, one for the 'vern' list, and one for everything else.

I have attached the 2 lists.

    hoping this will help,

    Vern

I'm not sure what you want me to do with your two lists?

  28. bink99

    bink99 Private E-2

well, we have eliminated every program listed in startup, and still the problem is the same; so presumaby one of the remaining items could be the culprit.
I supposed you would think which it might be, and we would eliminate that one, and so on.

however, a guy in the windows secrets lounge has suggested it is likely a tcp/ip conflict with the migrated programs, since in safe mode windows uses its own version.

he suggests uninstalling and reinstalling the affected programs.
not sure that will work since wlm at least can't be reinstalled, since its installer also won't access the internet.

I'm going to check out the tcp/ip setup, and try to see how it is different in safe mode.

I'm going to have a look
