I'm experiencing a problem with my windows live messenger(newest version), when i sign in to it, it appears to work but when I click on it, nothing works and the cursor changes to hourglass. After a few minutes of waiting, it goes to the screen where it says it will try to sing me in again in 45 seconds and when it does, the same thing as before happens.

    Specs:
    Windows XP pro sp2
    pentium D
    linksys wireless network card
    norton antivirus
    windows defender
    IE 7

Are you running the 8.5 Beta? You might want to try the previous version, just in case, though I have had no probs with the beta myself.

Also is your firewall set to allow Messenger internet access?

Does it allow you to click on anything before it reverts back to the sign-in page? Like can you click the TOOLS option in the drop down menus at the top?

Long shot but a curious fix for a hanging LIVE MSN 8.5 is reboot your router,

Version of messenger is 8.1(sorry if I mislead you in post #1)

Yesterday it worked fine for a while till I got error 80072ee7(don't know when the error first showed up, I was playing a game at the time) I fixed the aforementioned error by adding msnmsgr.exe to the permit list of the Norton Antivirus 'Internet worm protection'(windows firewall says this is the firewall on my computer.)

After this, the sign in sign out syndrome started again.:cry

It does not, also there are no drop down menus at the top (see screenshot)

Could windows defender have a separate firewall from Norton?:confused

Forgot to mention in post #6 that two of the three buttons(maximize is disabled) on the title bar work.

I have two ways to stop the 'sign in, sign out' syndrome: I can use the close button on the title bar, or I can press the 'cancel' button on the sign in page.

Do you have a icon in toolbar, I do w/o signing in - same version.

If so right click icon > open messenger > tools > options > connection > Connection TroubleShooter, maybe that will tell you something.

Don't think it would be Defender, have not used it in ages though.

    I have the icon.

I already tried the Connection TroubleShooter and the link in post #8, tried them again to be sure, no change.

You do have drop down menus if you click on the triangle (see attached screenshot)

Select TOOLS >OPTIONS >CONNECTIONS and start the Connection Trouble Shooter. Work through what ever choices you have - I can't remember and it won;t let me run it as my connection is ok. Let us know what happens...any error messages etc.

This error occurs when you are not connected to the internet, check your internet connection and make sure it is working properly. The most likely cause for this problem is that your firewall does not allow Messenger to access the internet. This happens often if you install a new version of Messenger. Make sure Messenger is allowed access in your firewall rules.

This error might also occur if a proxy server is enabled in Messenger or Internet Explorer while you do not use one. To remove the proxy settings, click the "Tools" menu and then "Options..." at your Messenger main window. Then in the options screen click "Connection" in the list to the left. Next, click the "Advanced Settings..." button. You can try and uncheck all checkboxes in this screen except the one labeled "TCP" to let Messenger connect through a direct connection. If that does not work you can restore the settings again by checking the boxes you unchecked before.

Do I do this while signed in? If so, then I can't because the triangle button doesn't work as does everything else except for the buttons on the title bar(see screenshot)

I tried it while not signed in and there were no error messages, unless it puts the error messages in a log saved somewhere on my computer.

    Error 80072ee7:
As I said in post #6, this error was corrected.

I tried this, just now, without success.

Sorry it took so long though, I was busy and forgot all about it.

I would still check the Proxy settings as Lev mentioned even if your not now getting the error message showing up as a proxy setting and as many ISPs use them could upset and randomly disconnect you.

Which Norton Product do you have, is it just Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security?

Also and its not normally what i would suggest but disable all of Norton and test messgenger only, dont use IE or other browsers unless you have re-enabled your Norton.

If you haev Norton Internet Security then follow the below....
You mention Windows Firewall, is this enabled? ( mentioned in #6 ) if enabled then two firewalls running will conflict and can cause random disconnections and a fair few error 404s when your surfing.

How to disable the Windows firewall

Also list all the other security software you have installed?

I think I already checked them:confused, I'll check them again to be sure.

    Norton Antivirus 2006

    I'll try this with caution.:major

it seem to be disabled(at least that's what it says in the windows firewall window) but on the main it says it's still on, I think its detecting 'internet worm protection' (part of Norton AV, see screenshot)

    windows defender
    windows security center

Emptied all related fields in both IE and WLM and no change.

Norton AV does not appear to block WLM because the problem is stil there when AV is disabled.

Under "tools>options>connections>advanced settings" There is a checkbox to make WLM generate a log, I checked the box, the log it generated has a lot of code and I'm not sure what it all means so maybe you guys can take a look at it?

Hopefully it will help us find what is causing the problem.

P.S. All personal information has been removed from the log.

Sorry this is not an exact fix here, going by gut feeling, try test again, you should get a message in text box when you test, even when not connected mine tells me I can connect, yours should give you another message, see if you can post that message, your log is above my user level. Sorry this is not an exact science for me, sure programmers could tell you.

I'll do it, but I'm still hoping Halo or Lev can help me with the log in #17.

I'll look at the log again to se if I can find anything that could possibly causing the probem.

I've never used Windows Defender so maybe this is a stupid question but isnt' it an antivirus program and doesn't this mean there are two antivirus programs running on )V(eTalMan's computer? Not that I expect that is part of the problem but for what it's worth...

WlM does'nt seem to detect that I'm using a wireless connection, so when I run the connection troubleshooter, it does'nt check it.

I'v tried it with my parent's laptop witch also uses a wireless conection, and when you view the connection status the icons are diffferent, also, there is an extra message below.

I will post screenshots of both.

I looked at the log again and could'nt find anything that could help.

Could it be the old windows messenger that is interfering with WLM?:confused
If so, is there a way to uninstall it?

Finally, Here's what the connection status for the WLM on my parent's laptop:
