Windows Locking Up

Trying to clean up my mother's computer. The other day the anti-virus started spazzing, and then right after, Windows started locking up after a few minutes of running.

Logs are attached below. I ran SAS and MBAM in Safe Mode (it doesn't lock up at all), ComboFix started in Safe Mode and finished in Normal (I wasn't paying attention when I restarted). ComboFix was yelling at me about the anti-virus, but I had disabled it, so I'm not sure why it was still registering as active. RootRepel and MGtools were both run in Normal mode.

When running MGtools, I kept getting an NTVDM system error related to C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe that I just kept ignoring.

Normal mode will run anywhere from about 5 to 15 min before locking up. I also noticed that links were missing in FireFox when I went into it. (For example, I could enter threads on this forum, but any links in the posts were missing).

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe by noahdfear and save it to your Desktop
    • Double click HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe to run it and follow any prompts.
      • If the tool detects an mbr infection
        • please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
        • Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes after bootup, and then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • helpasst -mbrt
        • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
        • When it completes, a log will open.
        • Attach this log to your next message.
      • If the tool DOES NOT detect an mbr infection and completes running:
        • Click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • mbr -f
        • Make sure you leave a space between mbr and the -f
        • Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
        • Now shut down the computer (do not restart, you must shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
        • Give it about 5 minutes after the bootup and then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.
          • helpasst -mbrt
        • Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt
        • When it completes, a log will open.
        • Attach this log to your next message.
No matter what happens with the above, attach the above logs and then immediately continue with the below in normal boot mode!

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\$$$dq3e
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\$67we.$
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\scs3B.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\scs3C.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\scs41.tmp
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\scs42.tmp
    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\HelpAssistant

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this, and also attach the log from running HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe.

Let me know how things are running now?

Still can't function in normal mode. I tried running combofix in normal and it would just freeze like everything else part way through. Also tried the mgtools getlogs in normal mood, but the screen would go black and just sit there.

I ran the helpasst thing but it didn't give me a log. When I did helpasst -mbrt part, a screen came up saying something about the help assist ok, press any key to continue, then mbr ok, press any key to continue, then it just closed.

I've attached the combofix and mgtools logs.

    Yes it did. See: C:\HelpAsst.log

Based on your logs though, you are still infected and we need to see what happened with HelpAsst

I see 3 partitions on your hard disk but only two being used by Windows
    Code:
    Partition Disk #0, Partition #0
Partition Size 101.54 GB (109,026,054,144 bytes)
    Partition Starting Offset 32,256 bytes
    Partition Disk #0, Partition #1
Partition Size 10.00 GB (10,742,215,680 bytes)
    Partition Starting Offset 109,026,086,400 bytes
    Partition Disk #0, Partition #2
Partition Size 251.02 MB (263,208,960 bytes)
    Partition Starting Offset 119,768,302,080 bytes
Are you doing some kind of multi-boot setup for other OS's?

We need to see the below log before creating a fix.
    • Download bootkit_remover.rar
    • Click the underlined DOWNLOAD text to download the file and save it to your Desktop.
    • You then need to extract the remover.exe file from the RAR using a program capable of extracing RAR compressed files. If you don't have an extraction program, you can use 7-Zip
    • After extracing remover.exe to your Desktop, double click the remover.exe file to run the program.
    • Attach or post inline here, the output from remover.exe

The 10GB Partition was there on purchase, I think maybe for back up files, but nothing was there, so it is occassionally used as another storage.

No idea what the 250MB Partition is though.

    Remover.exe says:
    \\.\C: -> \\.\PhysicalDrive0
    \\.\D: -> \\.\PhysicalDrive0

111 GB \\.\PhysicalDrive0 Controlled by rootkit!
Boot code on some of your phsical disks is hidden by a rootkit.
To disinfect the master boot sector, use the following command: remover.exe fix <device_name>
To inspect the boot code manually, dump the master boot sector: remover.exe dump <device_name> [output_file]

They both must be factory partitions.

Now - please do the following:
    • Click Start, Run then copy and paste the below into the Run box and click OK.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\remover.exe" fix \\.\PhysicalDrive0
    • Now reboot your PC and after reboot continue with the below instructions.
    • Look for the below folders and if if the still exist, delete them.
      • C:\Documents and Settings\HelpAssistant.CARRIE-LAPTOP
      • C:\Documents and Settings\HelpAssistant
    • Now delete the below files if they still exist:
      • C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\$$$dq3e
      • C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\$67we.$
    • Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

      Then attach the below logs:
      • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

On reboot, get an Operating System not found message.

Crap! What kind of message did you get from BootKit Recover when you ran the fix? Were there any error messages?

Did you have any non-standard boot partitions setup up?

Do you have your Windows XP boot cd?

The Bootkit recovery thing seemed to work fine. No error messages that I saw.

No none-standard boot partitions that I know of.

Windows XP cd might be around somewhere but I'd hafta search long and hard for it. I'm thinking this might be a sign I should just format :p

Hmmm? Then I'm not sure what happened.

How are you going to format and reinstall with out the CD? ;) You need it either way to attempt to fix the problem or to reinstall.

With the CD, we could try what is in the below:
