What problem were you trying to fix that running scandisk and defrag didn't fix? Have you tried system restore?

defrag and scan disk wouldn't work in normal mode so i tried it in safe made with the same luck all it did was freeze the computer. they had it wiped out and redone a couple months ago. now it wont get out of safe mode, even when i try hitting the delete key while its booting up and trying to do it that way and still starts in safe mode. and i tried system restore still no luck with it either

    Kilroy,

You are going to have to tell us more. Be a little more specific about what is happening with the computer.

when i start the computer it looks like it starts in safe mode the 640x480 16 color bit screen, but it doesnt say safe mode in the corners of the screen like it should when you do start in safe mode, also i seen with the display driver its sayin that some of the files aren't there and i dont know what i did to it, all i did was start it in safe mode to run disk defrag and scan disk and when it didn't work i just shut it down and its been starting different since. and they don't have the windows me install disk.

Try running System File Checker and Registry Checker, not sure where it is in ME. Maybe Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information, then under Tools.

I would also go thru the steps in the this Spyware Link, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

  9. Ok system file checker needs the cd so forget that. Also it may be doing the scandisk and just not showing it. Mine does it all the time when i schedule one and boot into safe mode. It will show the boot stuff and then like freeze at that screen with all this info and the hd will be doing somthing. I think it is doing the scandisk at that time but will not show it as display stuff is not allowed.

Go ahead and run System File Checker. You only need the CD if something is wrong (which is why I ask).

    Steve

  11. It will always run the cd because system file checker always copies things to the dll cache.

I'm not going to tie up this thread arguing with you, it only confuses the poster. Let's wait until they try a few things before any more thoughts.

  13. Ok, im not really trying to start any trouble so dont think that. But i stand by my decision that the sfc will eventually ask for the windows cd and will not complete untill the cd is inserted.

the reason i was wondering about the cd is to put the s3 driver stuff that the computer (device manager) said it was missing or not working properly back in it. i also found the registry checker and ran it it said no errors, couldn't find the system file checker i ran the adaware it found some things but nothing changed its also kind of hard to read some things cause of the way the screen is. it can boot up in safe mode and you can see the safe mode in all 4 corners. when i ran the scan disk it found errors, a good bit i might add cant remember what they was, it seems to only freeze up when it runs on the thorough setting when it scans the disk surface i left it alone about 10 minutes after it froze up and it still didnt do anything, and also they have a pc doctor or something like that installed and when it scanned the hard drive it got to the last step which also was to scan the disk surface and it froze up as well. which is why i tried to do the stuff in safe mode and no the screen all screwed up, ha. its a few years old been worked on so many times, and they also said that one guy that worked on it had 2 different types of windows 98 on it. they had it redone with windows me in october 2005 and it still gave them problems like performing illegal operations and some other stuff. i dont think they have a virus scanner on the computer, so if it does have a virus would i be able to install a virus scanner on the computer with the virus, because when i got my computer it got a virus and when i tried to put norton in it wouldnt take it which is why i ask. so on another note what i'm thinking is that they need a new computer and take that one out back and shoot it or something, and if i can think of anything else i will add to this novel.

sorry for the trouble i'm just lost. never had this happen to me neither did i know it could.

See if there are any restore points configured you can revert to.

    Click the Start button.
Point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
Choose Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next.
Click a day on the calendar, click the restore point description, and then click Next.
Make sure you have closed all your files and open programs, and then click OK to close the dialog box.
    Click Next.

Also, yes you should be able to install most of the programs required in the link I gave you.

Something I forgot to add, if you are running a Thorough Scandisk and it has not been run in awhile it's going to take longer, alot longer in some cases. It might not be freezing, just taking longer than normal. Give it a chance.

Run it in safe mode and make sure that automatically fix errors is checked.

When you have a chance go back to Device Manager, click on the + sign for Display Adapter and highlight below, click properties and driver. See if you can update it.

ok i went to the windows update site and there was 25 critical update for their computer and also there was driver update after i got done updating theur computer i restarted it and it worked fine the normal screen and everything, then i restarted it again to make sure it would stay and it didn't.

  21. Wait what is the manufacturer of the computer? The reason i ask this is that most mass produced pc's have some type of recovery partition on the hard drive with a windows install thing on it that is usually bundled with software from the manufacturer. If that exists we can run the system file checker without needing the cd as the computer will just draw windows files from that recovery thing on the disk.
