I'm helping my friend on a computer problem.
The computer is a PIII 800mhz running XP Home edition
linked to the internet on a high speed cable modem.

    The computer was loaded with
pests. Pestpatrol, Spybot S&D, Adaware SE all were ran several times - finally in safe mode until everything came up clean. (@ 5 hours later)

Then we tried to install Norton Antivirus, but
"Microsoft Windows Me Step By Step Installer" suddenly took over
the install process. I cancelled out of the install and went to add remove
programs and deleted Windows Me step by step installer.
I rebooted the computer and tried the Norton install again.
Once again the Windows Me step by step installer took over the install
process so this time I allowed it to complete the install. I then rebooted and
tried to install Norton again and the Windows Me step by step installer
    took over the install process.
I deleted the step by step installer again and repeated the process twice
    more with the same results.
I don't know how teh Microsoft Windows ME Step By Step Installer
originally got on the computer, hence the placing of this in the spyware
    section.

So anyway, I don't know what to do here.
    Any ideas?

One other thing. Does anybody even know what Windows Me
Step by Step Installer is? I did a google lookup on it and couldn't
    find any information on it.

I don't know if this helps, but the full program name is
Windows ME Step by Step Interactive.

    Have you seen:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=591265a7-e7f4-409f-992b-84d954824ba8&displaylang=en

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS05-031.mspx

The program itself appears to be from Microsoft and does not appear to be malware.

When you say you "deleted" Step by Step, what do you mean? Did you uninstall it using Add/Remove programs?

This may be more of an issue for the Software Forum than the Spyware Forum. However, if you still feel you have malware related problems, follow the procedures below and we will find out:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).
