    Hey dudes,
I just bought a new PC and still have my old hard drive. The new PC has Vista, but I want to access all the things on my old HD, like my music and such and continue to run my download programs for music. How do I do this making my old HD as a slave. Will it mess up the Vista?
    Thanks

    Shawn

p.s my old HD is ok, I smoked the MB on other PC

No, it wont mess up Vista.

You need to attach power to the drive
attach the ribbon from your new hard drive to the old drive (red striped end of the cable faces power)

Boot up and you will see the drive as a new drive that you can access.

Basically, it is as simple as seeing how your first drive is hooked up and copying that. It can vary as to how the drives were setup, but hopefully the main drive is attached and the connecter is there for the second drive.

My advise is essentially the same as that which has been given. I'm assuming both machines have IDE drives and/or you know how to connect such drives. Remove the old drive from your computer, keep the screws and remember how you removed it, you may need the IDE cable.

If you have an SATA HDD. You should find the optical as the primary IDE master, if so I suggest setting the old HDD as the master and the optical drive as the slave to the master. Look at the rear of the drive and set the optical drive as Slave or Cable Select. Cable Select will allow the BIOS to make the decision for you.. e.g. if you already have a master drive installed on IDE 0 it will set the optical drive as the slave or if there are no drives installed it will default the optical drive as master.

To set as Slave, Master or Cable Select you should notice a small jumper to the rear and normally to the left of the IDE cable beside the audio out jack. The drive should show markings such as MA - Master, SL - Slave & CS - Cable Select.

Unless you changed any settings your old HDD will already be set to master. This won't mess up vista, just check in your BIOS before booting to the OS to ensure your drives are configured correctly before proceeding to boot. if things go wrong you may boot into ME and get a BSOD! If so just correct the boot sequence by jumpers or via the BIOS.

If all goes well you should boot into Vista, it will install drivers after detecting the new hardware and you should be able to access your new (old) drive.

    Good Luck :)
