Windows Media Player 10

WMP10 is continually trying to 'phone home'. My Sygate Personal Firewall blocks it and no Sygate alert window appears. But the WMP10 program itself (I guess) throws up a little alert window for a few seconds (in the lower right corner of the screen). Checking the "do not show this window again" option has no effect.
Is there a way to shut off this annoying feature?

Are you saying that you have a virus/dialer on your computer?

No virus or dialer. The program itself tries to access the network.

Is it the Windows Media Configuration tool that is trying to connect or is it just plain ol' WMP? The config tool always tries to access the net whenever you open the player. What it is trying to do, I do not know, but I always block it.

WMP checks for codecs autoamtically online.

Also, it always updates the lists of online stores.

Its not phoning home, its updating.

Various programs that persist in "phoning home" may be innocent but we always wonder as "they" don't tell you what they are trying to do. Lexmark and MS Word are the latest to attempt this, on my PC, since I copied all my old "C" drive to another drive.

Is there a way to shut off this annoying feature apart from checking the deny box in Zone Alarm (and apply box). Can the REgistry be edited? Bazza

Thanks. I have downloaded it to give it a try. Sometimes you want programs to "phone home" like Avast, updates for example. Others like Lexmark. you don't want them to.

Guess a bit of trial and error is in order. Bazza

Any attempt by a program to access the network I refer to as "phoning home".

If you say so. Imo, phoning home refers to applications doing it to send off unknown info like spyware, etc, which is not what wmp is doing.

You have your explanation either way.

    Hi Iam New to MG

    but with refrence to Problem

Open WMP | Tools | Options

    Click the Player Tab

See if the check box " Download codecs automatically " is checked

    That is the default,
