I recently recovered from a Malware infestation thanks to the help of TimW over in the Malware Removal forum. Following removal of all Malware from my system I noticed I was having an issue with Windows Media Player and he suggested I come over here for support.

I am currently unable to use WMP to play MP3 or MPG files. When I try to play these files I get the following error message:

Clicking Web Help tells me I'm getting error code C00D11B1 and that they think there is something wrong with my sound device. I've gone through the recommended fixes and they aren't helping. I'm fairly convinced my sound device is just fine as all other sound can be heard.

I've tried playing these files through Quick Time and the MP3's play fine there but the MPG's still fail out with the following error:

Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated. I'm particularly concerned about the integrity of the mpg files as they represent the sole copy of home movies of my kids.

    Get VLC http://majorgeeks.com/VLC_media_player_d4674.html
uncheck everything except .mpg as you still want WMP to play all the other files.
Right click the file and select open with VLC or if that is not shown, click open with and browse for VLC.

I download VLC as suggested and it seems to be playing the mpg files just fine. That's a relief as I'm now much more confident that the mpg files themselves haven't been damaged in some way.

I'm still interested in repairing WMP though and would appreciate any suggestions anyone would have. WMP is currently useless to me since it can't play anything so I'd like to restore it's functionality.

Would anyone have any suggestions on how to repair WMP or even a thought as to what the root of the issue might be?

Sorry, I can't help with repairing WMP because I use almost anything but that.

Maybe start a new thread asking for help repairing WMP 11 in Vista will get your problem noticed, now that you know the files are okay.

I did some googling and came up with a post on a different forum that recommended downloading and installing the K-Lite Codec Pack - Basic.

I uninstalled the Combined Community Codec Pack using Programs and Features and then installed the K-Lite Codec Pack - Basic. During its installation process it identified a number of registry keys that were no longer valid. I had it remove these keys and then ran a registry scan using CCleaner. After the scan was done I had it fix all detected issues and then rebooted.

Once the reboot was complete Windows Media Player was back in business.
