Windows Media Player DRM Problem

I have been fighting this problem for three days. Somehow the Digital Rights Management is screwed up on this computer. Any application that attempts to use DRM will create an Application Error and terminate. I spent two days trying to uninstall (roll back) WMP11 and couldn't do it. Finally I restored the Uninstall file from a backup and was able to roll back.

I did a windows update and installed WMP11 again. During the process I again got "drmupgds.exe - Application Error". And again, WMP11 seems fine until I try to do something with DRM.

    Any Ideas?

    Pete

Won't work. I just got "SysFader:iexplore.exe - Application Error" Any attempt to do anything associated with DRM gives an application error in any program that attempts it. I believe my son tried to install a music program, TuneBrite and it caused this. I unstalled it but that didn't help and TuneBrite keeps saying it can't be them.

You might want to try Revo Uninstaller Pro, it has a free 30 day trial, to see if it finds any leftovers from Tunebrite. Then, try the DRM reset procedure.

    Wow. Too late for me.

I'm thinking I might have to restore from a full backup I made last Friday. I tried to restore just the WMP11 folder and TrueImage reports that "Access is Denied" to the Program Files folder. I think the only thing to do is a full restore, sector by sector. That will wipe out all the work I have done this week.

I was thinking I could save MyDocuments on another drive and drag them back after the restore. The question is, what other folders should I do this with to keep what I have done this week? For example, I use Outlook Express so I will do the same for the OE "Store Folder".

    Thanks

Good for you! You have the done the most important thing a user can do, create a regular system backup. There are so many options available, including free, a person should always have a system backup available.

    tgell,

No go. Revo uninstaller could not find tunebrite not a proram it uses called audials.

Any ideas on what files may have change since I did the last backup besides MyDocuments and Store Folder? I don't mean programs I may have installed, just files that get updated during normal day to day work.

If you did a complete system backup in the last week I would only worry about any files you personally changed or saved such as Office documents or pictures. I would make sure you backed up My Documents in all user accounts. You could do a search to see what files were changed since your last backup. If you used Acronis as a file backup application and not to create a full system backup image, then you cannot revert back to before Tunebite was installed. You did do a complete system backup image, correct? I am not familiar with Acronis but if you use it as a file backup app. can you do a differential backup that would add any files added or modified. I would not worry about any files changed by the programs themselves.

I have a removable disk drive that is connected only to do backups (and a very infrequent restores). I do a sector by sector image backup four times a year and then weekly incremential backups. So I have a backup started Oct 1.

I copied all the users (that were on this week) from Documents and Settings to another drive. I also copied the Outlook Express store folder (which should be in Documents and Settings but.....). To do that I had to logout my name and log in as Admin so my UsrClass file could be copied.
So now I'll start the Restore. Wish me luck. Hope to be back in 6 hours or less.

Well, the restore finished at 4:00 AM. Everything is back working. I copied each user's C:\Documents and Settings files back over the top of what was restored. I had to keep changing logons to copy different users.

It seems that I got everything that I had worked on after the backup. What an experience and thanks to Acronis TrueImage.

    And thanks to you guys.

Glad to hear you are back in business. You must have a fairly large hard drive to backup. Using one of the free image programs, I was able to do a complete system image backup of 35GB in about 20 minutes and a restore in about 30 minutes. I usually do a complete image backup once a month.

Wow. Sorry for the delayed reply. I must have missed the email notification. My disk drive is 110GB. About 80GB is used but I don't think that matters because I do a sector by sector backup. I also set it to the maximum compression rate.

I think the compression rate is the reason it takes so long to restore.

Yep, 80GB at maximum compression and sector to sector will definitely slow it down.
