Something has renamed all 189 gigs of music I have stored. Each individual track. On some, it's just a matter of being rearranged, i.e. Strong Persuader, track 05, Robert Cray Band instead of the original 05 Robert Cray Band, Strong Persuader = makes album play out of order. Others that were named and numbered are now unknown name, unknown artist, unknown track.

I have tried renaming and renumbering a few, only to find that they are, again, messed up.

If I knew what is doing this, I would feel alot better, but it still makes me a bit ill to think of manually renaming 189 gigs of tunes..............

    Help? Please?
    Thanks and Blessings,
    Port-O-San

I'm not usre how to fix this, but I think the renaming happened 'cuz a playlist was created. Playlists need no know in what order to play the music, and therefore the ones that could be renamed (the artist and track info were 'embedded' in the file') to play in order were renamed starting with a number. If the song didn't have the 'embedded' info, it got renamed to Unknown blah blah blah.... I'll do some research and look for a fix for you that's better than manually renaming almost 200gb of songs :banghead Whilst I'm looking for a solution, yuou should look thru the multimedia section here at Major Geeks. There's probably a program in there that will (hopefully) speed up the renaming process, maybe even automate it as much as possible. If I find out anything, I'll post it. In the meantime, maybe someone else will come along with a bit more info, and alot more help ;)

    HD2K,

Thanks for your interest in my silly issue!
I found a possible culprit in folder options = but "Mr. Nobody" must have made the change(s) - only self and wife use this machine and she's excellent about not making changes, period (bless her peapickin' li'l heart!).
AM thinking the change happened when I loaded this version of Win Media Player (10) = we don't make playlists, we're album-or-singles listeners.
I figure more info might help you help me?
Anyway, if you see something that may be of help, it'll have to be better than either Metallicizing my cranium (banging my head) or manually renaming the whole lot.
Believe it or not, almost all of this is legal fair market purchase and what isn't is 50 or more years out of date and so unpopular as to be underneath the dimebin. Wouldn't want you to think you were aiding/abetting an internet music felon. I bought/sold used CDs on ebay and kept a copy of everything.
    Blessings,

    ZBD21,

This is helpful and will raise my level of understanding and ability to use Win Media Player, but I don't think it addresses the issue of having renamed and shuffled all my music files. I have no duplicates. I think we're on the right track, though and if you think of anything else, I'd sure appreciate a shout!
    Thanks and Blessings,

I'm still searching...... be patient.... it may be a day or two.
BTW- you're in the UK, yes? I lived there for awhile back in the '70's and can tell by your wordage (is 'wordage' even a word?)....

    HD2K,

No, not in UK, never had what I assume would be the pleasure. Am, however of Lancashire stock and a lifelong Anglophile. Favourites being "Last of the summer wine", "CHEF!", and "Mulberry" (my Mum IS "The Bucket Woman" Hyacinth "Boo-Kay" and I give her no end of grief over her behaviour).
    Blessings,

I put this together a couple of days ago, because nobody else seemed to have any suggestions at the time but didn't get round to posting it. So if any of it seems to be repeating what someone else has said, it probably is! Main reason I'm posting it is because these links haven't been given yet and the info may help.

    Check out this:

You don't actually mention if the file names are being changed only in the media library or on the hard disk itself so you might like to look at this information too, which applies definitely to media player 9 and is ambiguous about earlier version:

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS03-021.mspx

And although you probably aren't using this software, it mentions a setting to check:

    Hope it helps! :)
