    Hi

Its very possible if you have a 3rd party burning application installed that this disabled or you may have in tweaking settings the internal burner of XP, so to just make sure its working follow the below

Confirm IMAPI service is running, to do this goto Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

    • Locate and right click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service, and then click Properties >
    • Set the Startup type to Automatic and if its stopped click start. ( note its better to logoff or restart to make sure this service starts properly )

Next check the recording capability of XP is enabled

    • Click Start Menu or Desktop double click My Computer > in the section of Devices with Removable Storage is your CD/DVD drive recognised? if so great, right click it and choose Properties.
    • You should see a Recording tab, click that and choose Enable CD recording on this drive.

What other brning software do you have installed? as one cause is some versions of Roxio corrupt the burning capabilities of WMP11, mainly Drag to Disk, many find uninstalling this helps WMPs burning capabilities to start working again.

Thanks for the reply and I will try this tonight right now on laptop and the problem is on the one I built and I do have roxio installed so I will start the first step you mention first and probably end up with drag to disk causing the problem.. and I will let you know how it goes.. thanks again.

Hey Halo did the first things you told me to do and no luck so it must be the drag to disk how do I get rid of drag to disk without uninstalling roxio? can I just shut drag to disk off? thanks again for the help

    Hi

Is the IMAPI service still showing in services as started and automatic?

    • Dependent on version and if it was a retail CD or a downloaded version you can do various things to remove.
    • You can go into Add/Remove and highlighting Roxio choose repair install then choose custom and uncheck drag to disk ( not an option in the downloaded or some OEM versions )
    • At times its installed in Add/Remove as a seperate option so locate it and uninstall it.
    • You could see if drag to disk is actually the culprit and go into msconfig and uncheck it from starting with the PC on boot, then see if this causes issues in WMP, as roxio may not be the culprit. ( only issue with using msconfig is that it doesnt uninstall any of the application so if its, its software thats causing the problem it will still be there )

Also check in WMP that it recognises that you actually have a burner installed, open WMP and click the Burn button and on the right side at top ( see pic ) it should list your devices, if your burner is not the first listed change by clicking next drive.

I think I figured it out maybe in the my computer it says dvd ram drive but the burner physically says compact disc rewriteable dvd multi recorder rw dvd-r dl so maybe it just does dvd and not both I just assumed it did when I seen it to buy because it said compact disc rewriteable...

    Hi

Windows pre Vista. had a tendancy to report a CDRW/DVDRW as a DVD/CD ROM drive in My Computer but in Device Manager would see it correctly, so think your OK.

So just to recap, you have the following all listed ok?

    • Recorder tab in Properties of CDRW Drive.
    • IMAPI Service set to automatic and started.

If so then not a bad sign as its recognised as a capable burner.

Is your XP fully upto date? with latest service pack as of writing SP2 and all current updates.

This KB while doesnt specifically address your issue, with the messages you get, could be part and parcel http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935551

I did a bit more reading of applications that could cause issue with your WMP11 and do you have installed this applciation Magix Audio Cleaning Lab if you do then this is the culprit and this is the fix http://download.magix.net/windows_2000_xp_registry_fix_uk.zip

One other suggestion I have is to delete the CD driver from Device Manager and XP will on reboot or clicking in Device Manager Action and Add New Hardware and scan for changes as this will add the driver back.

Hey no problems on delay, I know home life is very important, so dont worry as I will always relook at thread if I remember or if I do forget to reply, nudge me with a PM.

No magic cleaning lab is not part of WMP11, was just a thought as I know their app did cause issues with WMP.

Actually we now have XP SP3 upon us, need to re-read the fix list to see if any WMP components are updated.
