After installing updates to my computer, Windows Media Player has failed to cooperate and no longer works, probably due to one of the updates screwing with it.

When I try to use it, it hits me with this:

"The file wmploc.dll has a version number of 12.0.7601.23930 where 12.0.7601.23517 was expected.

Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled."

    and later

    "Server execution failed"

And I can't reinstall it because when I try to, the installer tells me it's not applicable with my computer. So if anyone could help me out with this, I'd appreciate it.

Wow you aren't even telling us what versions of Windows and WMP you are using

    Anyway, try THIS

Ah, my bad. I neglected to mention that, sorry. You don't have to be sarcastic.

I'm using Windows 7. As for the version of WMP, how can I check that? I'm unable to open the program itself due to the error.

Also, I've tried that already. It didn't work. Though maybe it's because when I do turn it off, when I reboot, it's right back on automatically?

wmplayer.exe must be set to start with Windows. You can correct that by downloading Microsoft's Autoruns and unchecking it. Autoruns doesn't have to be installed, just run the exe.

Hmm, wmplayer.exe isn't showing up in the program, despite having it on the computer. Tried checking and unchecking various options in the Options tab, and it doesn't register it.

I may be missing something though. I apologize. :(

You have tried using the filter at the top?

Yeah. Entered the name of the file and it wouldn't show up.

Thought I'd try the above suggestion again. I get an error message that not all of the features were successfully changed when I unchecked the box. When I exit out and run it again, the box is rechecked.

Not sure if it's meant to do that, or what.

mmm...tough one. You could try enabling the hidden administrator account and repeating the procedure there but that's just a shot in the dark. Perhaps a better bet would be to run the system file checker sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt.

Yep, run sfc. I've just been looking at the WMP file versions in my Win 7 VM which is up to date. They are identical to yours but my WMP starts without error.

Ah, that did it! The Windows Media Player is working smoothly again.

Thanks a bunch, that really helped.
