I use Windows XP, and I have been having problems with the very annoying windows messenger program. I use trillian pro, and when I dial up to connect, windows messenger also connects to the messenger service. Unfortunately, Windows Messenger takes longer to log on, so when it logs on, I get booted off trillian. I can't figure out how to stop it from logging me on. Uninstalling it doesn't work, because all that uninstalls is the desktop and startup icons.

Windows Messenger runs as a Service. You can't get rid of it, but you can shut it down. Open Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Services (NOT Component Services), and scroll down the long list of Services to "Messenger". Double click on it. In the drop-down box next to Startup Type, change to Disabled, just below that click on Stop to stop the service from running, and it won't bug you anymore. Windows Messenger was designed for network administrators to send client boxes notices, and if you aren't on a large network, you won't miss it. It's also used today by some spammers to pop-up ads on your puter any time you're connected to the internet. You won't miss THAT at all. :D

I'm talking about windows messenger, not messenger. I was trying to figure out how to get rid of those pop-ups, though.

that is windows messenger listed in the services. I believe it is just listed in there as messenger .If you do as GT said it will stop it from running

You guys make it so confusing when you call it Windows Messenger.

It would be much more clear if you guys called it the Messenger service :)
