Hi, I have a pretty bog standard Packard bell lappy, 2.4 mobile amd, 40 gig, XP etc etc, I have just installed XP and it has not found a whole bunch of drivers, for really simple things like USB controllers... Is there a tool that will scan my machine and find out exactly what drivers I need and where to get them from?

    Cheers

Sounds as though you have a nice laptop! What was the original OS? You could download Everest from the download section of this forum and it will tell you everything about your computer, chipsets, etc. Another possibility is to go to the manufacturers website and check for drivers for your particular computer and model number. Hope this helps. Might try updating to SP2 as this could contain some Windows drivers for the devices in question. :)

shouldnt the maker of the laptop have the drivers on their website? seems reasonable to me that they would?

IT depends on the manufacturer. IBM are excellent at providing drivers, but some manufacturers are not so good. As I type I'm struggling my way through the HP site, trying to find chipset drivers...
