Upgrade HDD, Memory and video card, now Windows is telling me I ma not valadated and says I may have a "pirate" version of Win XP Pro... I have the sticker with the KEY on it. Windows worked fine before the upgrades... I also have a machine with win XP Home, same thing... try to valadate and they BOTH take me to an MS web site that is trying to sell Win 8. I don't need win 8... won't run on these machines, what brought all this on was I built a new system, installed Win 7 and used parts to upgrade the two that are having problem now. I want to know if any one is having this "valadate/Buy Win8' issue?

When you make three hardware changes within 90 days, you are required to go through Windows activation and validation (XP). I don't know if the other versions of Windows work this way too.

Nick T. ... yes, but thats not the point. To Valadate it takes me to a window that asks "If any of these solutions helped". There are NO solutions they only offer Win 8 for sale.... after they call me a "Pirate". I still have Win 3.1 floppys. I guess it won't really matter now though, yesterday I DL Ultimate Edition Linux. I just wanted to know if anyone else was up against the same wall.
    Thanks:)

    Emy1C4...

The validation process can really rub one the wrong way. I think it's a matter of expectations. I've run up against it with a PC someone gave me. It really got to me, since I had the factory disk and all. I determined that it was really that I was expecting more from Microsoft than they were delivering.

    What can I say?...expectations rule...

I have Linux Mint on Sun VirtualBox. It's fun to play with, and I am sure it's getting better by the day. Last time I checked the XP virtual mode program wasn't fully developed for XP programs to run. That would be a big step forward for the OS...

Sorry about this experience. It's really hitting below the belt the way Microsoft explains to users violations of the Windows Genuine Advantage rules. A pirate is about the truth of what that notification implies of the user...

Emy1C4, I never built a computer but yes, I've been around computers perhaps longer than you have. ;)

I used IBM keypunch cards, paper tape with a Digital Systems computer, cassette tapes in a tape recorder with a Tandy, probably a TRS-80 from looking at images and punched hexadecimal punch cards with a pencil.
