I found this quite funny but it has aparently caught some lay people with their pants down.

My mother in law got a phone call yesterday from some guy telling her he is from "Windows" not Microsoft, "Windows" and that they are getting bad error reports comming in from her PC.
She gave a wonderful argument telling him that the company name is "Microsoft" and Windows is a product lol

I looked it up and aparently this scam is one where they tell you that you have errors, get you to go into windows error commands which then shows you a list of windows errors and freaks you out, he then tells you not to worry and sets up remote desktop.
Then he installs some POS virus cleaner which "Fixes" the issue and then it all goes wrong a week or so later and then they start charging you upwards of $150 per hour.

She played gullable and told him that her son in law is a tek and will be at her house today (being sunday) and he should call back, he said he would.

I doubt very much if he will but I really hope he does because I could have soooooooo much fun with that :-D

Anyway those of you who are not PC savy, be very aware of this.

Microsoft does NOT phone you to help fix your PC.
Banks and Ebay or Paypal DO NOT email you asking for password or account info.
Basically , no reputable companies especially finacial institutes will ever contact you via email about indeapth details of your account.

Info on this scam can be found all over the net with a simple search of "Windows Phone scam"
I would post a link but my laptop is really slow and it would take too long lol, maybe I have errors and windows will phone me :-D

Yeah I know a relative that was nearly taken in by this one and it was only that they knew that MSFT do not phone you that he knew it was a scam. I have known of folk that have been scammed by this and had monies taken from their bank accounts!

I did have the usual company names that they use listed somewhere but cannot find it yet or put my mouse pointer on it.

I had one of those 'cold calls' though not this particular one. It's too bad that I wasn't in the mood to play ATT. I started off as a reasonable person but when they started spouting similar crap I just lost it and lambasted them, I was still screaming when I realized that the phone link was dead, they had hung up. Pity that I already had a particularly bad day.:-D

:crap these people are everywhere and they know no bounds. Seems like every country on every continent has them. My Mother got a cold call like this, luckily I was home and told them where to step off.

We have a government run system called "Do Not Call" here where you can register to not receive cold calls like this. Naturally the calls from OS call centres slip through, generally they end the call as soon as you indicate your on the Do Not Call Register.
Still I'm sure lots of people get caught out by these :***.

Everyone needs to earn an income, just don't get why they think they can earn their's by causing other people grief, have they no morals at all :confused

Awful when people get scammed by these sobs presenting themselves as coming from a ligit co.

I found that virtually all these calls are long distance.

I've got Call Display as well, can spot most of them scammers and telemarketers and don't pick up. Also am on a Do Not Call List and figure if no message is left, it's not important. If in doubt, I google the tel# and mostly there's a ton of complaints about the harassment people get. In addition I purchased a whistle for these type of calls, keep it beside the phone and although haven't had a need to blow it yet, it would make them hang up for sure. :-D Just got tired of being polite to them and ask them to remove our tel# from their calling list and that I'm on the DNCL. Sometimes I thought that the DNCL were part of the scam, it was that bad. I've called the DNCL quite frequently in the past to submit complaints.

Well, I'm in the USA and being on the Do Not Call list does Nothing to protect you from these creeps.

I've been getting a lot of calls about lowering the interest rate on my credit card. Of course they never mention what card or what bank or anything specific.

I talked to the B*&^^% once just to see what I could get out of her.

As soon as they know that you're on to them, They hang up. :(
