Anyone know the quickest and easiest way to set permissions to a folder and all of its subkeys in the Windows Registry

    Thanks

    Assuming XP:

Right click on the key in regedit and go to permissions.

Then go to advanced and make sure inherit permissions from parent is checked. Then change what you want.

That works one folder at a time.

What I need is to set permission on the main folder and all subfolders and subkeys all at once.

All I can do right now is mainfolder and subkeys.

I don't know how to make it set permissions for all subfolders.

    Any help is appreciated.

It works for all subfolders if you do it the way I said. The inherit permissions checkbox creates a trickle down effect. If you are especially brave, you can use the replace permissions option.

This function is not working for me.

Problem is that all the subfolders do not have an owner. So I've tried checking "Replace owner o subcontainers and objects" but I get the following error "Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys". When I try the following function "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects" I get the same error.

    Any ideas???

    Thanks for your help.

What specifically are you trying to do?

What I am trying to do is delete some unessecarry folders that are just taking up room but none of them have an owner. They are RealPlayer folders and I have already uninstalled RealPlayer.

The reason for all of this is because I am using Tune Up Utilities 2006 and the registry cleaner program could not delete these folders. So I am trying to remove them manually.

Well, its not advisable to change permissions on entire hives, it breaks entire system security. Can't you right click the ones in question, go to permissions, and give ownership to yourself by adding your account and/or going to the ownership tab? You could then delete them without being hassled. I guess Im confused on where/what you are wanting to change the permisisons to.

Thanks for trying to help but none of that seems to work quite the way I wanted it too.

I found a long way of doing it though.

    Thanks again.
