Windows Restore - Fake AV scan - Plomedia - Rootkit -PG1

    Running Vista 32
CA anti virus and spyware on all the time
Got a rootkit back in January - seemed to clean with tddsskiller.

Various fake Av scans (6-7) at different websites, quickly disconnected from internet and rebooted. A few loaded their programs and started running, so shutdown and booted in safemode and did a system restore. Quick fix that worked well.

Everything has run fine till 4/5, got the "Windows Restore" Fake AV and all hell broke lose - regular files on desktop changed to read only and hidden, 2 blue screens crashes, CA spyware with error message "ppctl component not correctly installed", 1000's of cookies in Window Temporary Internet Files, website redirects to Plomedia, Scour, and many others. Scripts running on desktop about not being able to reach so and so website even though Internet Explorer wasnt even open (Goggle or Firefox). Blah Blah Blah
    Too much to list...

After 3 days of safe mode, safe mode with networking, turning off Java scripts in Firefox and having to refresh webpages 5 or 6 time to be able to see them. I've made it here and decided to follow the sequence of scans listed and post my logs for review.

Gooredfix, TDSSkiller, SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix, RootRepeal, MGtools

I ran everything in normal mode with UAC off, lan off, cable disconnected (no internet connection) System Restore on.

    All ran fine except for:
Combofix - had to delete CA antivirus and spyware (as directed by CF), rebooted, box appeared saying it wasn't a clean uninstall, went back into Programs and Features to completely delete all of CA and things went crazy,
Something tried to go online to My-Etrust website, comp blue screened and crashed, rebooted and the ComboFix box was up saying it detects Rootkit activity and needs to reboot, things ran fine after that and it completed its scan.

RootRepeal - had trouble at Unknown Partition type6 (0x6) and locked up, waited 10 mins and hit the scan button again. It completed its scan.

Okay so I've run everything and will post the first 4 here (PG1) and the other 3 logs in a much shorter post (PG2), so please look for that one also.

I hope someone will check them and see if I'm cleaned and clear or will I need to do some manual deletion, or run other types of scans.
(such as Combo saying Userinit is infected but not showing it was fixed)

I don't have any antivirus, spyware, or firewall active right now, so I got this forum, website bookmarked for a safe way to get back here without going back out on the net and getting some other nasty thing.
Also, I still haven't turned on UAC or set a new restore point yet. I'll wait to see if there is more problems I need to resolve first.

    Thanks everyone for their time.

This is my second post, for the other 3 logs I need to post.
Please look at PG1 for the first 4.

Hopefully some can look them over and let me know what I should do next.
Ie... run more scans, manual deletes or ....

The MGlog is zipped - I can read it here but dont know which of the 14 files I need to submit.

Hi there and welcome. I am currently reviewing your logs and will get back to you with a set of instructions in the next post I make to you.

Before we continue I would like for you to use MSConfig to put this machine back into normal start up mode

    Malware Bytes
is outdated, please open up the program, use the update tab > then re-scan, fix anything it may find and attach the log regardless.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\Users\Walter\AppData\Local\0qo6n56dqg7b12mtrqt6221tv781hsx41s5q
    C:\Users\Walter\AppData\Local\qui2p08m0370
    C:\Users\Walter\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\0qo6n56dqg7b12mtrqt6221tv781hsx41s5q
    C:\Users\Walter\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\188FmQ8
    C:\Users\Walter\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\20xYJkS83BHk4
    C:\Users\Walter\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates\qui2p08m0370
    C:\ProgramData\0qo6n56dqg7b12mtrqt6221tv781hsx41s5q
    C:\ProgramData\qui2p08m0370

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Hi Kestrel13,

Thank you for your time in checking my logs.

I had my startup/service shut down (50% technique), as it was the only way my desktop wouldn't freeze up at reboot. After the initial run of the tools, I was able reset it into normal mode.

Reran the whole set of tools again after reboot (with all startups and services running), SAS and Malware Bytes fullscan logs were clean. RootRepeal report is still the same as the first one. (included with this post).

Overall, computer seems to be running better now.
No scripts running randomly like before, the shutdowns and restarts are much much faster.
No more hidden or read only files on my desk top.
I haven't been out on the web yet to see if those nasty random Plomedia redirects happen. (only been here reading all the forums and guides, yahoo.com, WOW).
I did download the Advanced System Care through the link in Major Attitudes video tutorial.
(Amazing program! used it to thoroughly cleanup 100's of old files-temps-programs, defragged C drive and registry. So many great fast tools in one package).

I still have no realtime antivirus or spyware installed yet.
Haven't decided if the Avast or AntiVir would be better for me.
    Comodo Firewall is a must.
Just wanted to get your reply about the next steps before getting something that would interfere.
Will be keeping the SAS and Malware

The logs you've requested are attached.
    Malware updated
    ComboFix updated
No problems running at all -

I do see Spigot and Skinux items in there.
I just Googled Spigot (but didnt click any links!).
Descriptions say its a Backdoor... Skinux is zlob/WorldAntiSpy...

Once again, thank you for your time.

You have the below installed...perhaps something to do with that?

    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\users\Walter\AppData\Roaming\Skinux
    Folder::
    c:\program files\Common Files\Spigot

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop

    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor.
    • Allow the application to run and a window will open showing that it is TDSSkiller from Kaspersky
    • Click Start scan
    • It will run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some data on it
    • Right click on the screen and select > Select All
    • Press Control+C
    • Open a notepad and press Control+V
    • now please ATTACH that report to this thread

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Hi,
    New logs attached.
Did have a problem running MGlogs, it locked up at the:

    adding: runkeys.txt
which is right after the "note" line.
Waited 20 mins. with no results.

Deleted MGlogs from desktop (only place it would load to - 3 days ago).
Came back here and downloaded a new copy to C drive and ran it for there.
Still seemed to hang up but did produce the zip file I loaded here.

Computer seems to run fine. Quick and fast with no hang ups.

Had some trouble accessing Yahoo mail with my current activeX settings - had followed the guide in the malware protections section. Oddly after getting in to my account, it booted me and had me relog over and over. I was using standard IE and google to get there first, but switched to Firefox and I was able to log right in.

Still haven't been out web surfing. (Certainly have/will change my habits after this week of near disasters.)
I have noticed that my search bar for Firefox has change from google to yahoo. Don't know if that is/was part of the Spigot - SearchSettings virus or not. It was "protecting" my homepage! Not even sure where that program (spigot) came from - had downloaded MSessentials, Comodo AV, AntiVir PE and Secunia over this last week as test runs to see I liked them and immediately removed them after review. Something somewhere has changed the the tool bar. But the seach engine is still google.

Will wait for your next set of instructions before continuing...

(MClogs still is frozen in place, wont complete it's cycle liked it has in the past.) Had to manually close.

Sorry, didn't mean to bump my post but missed the 10 min time limit to edit.

    Just want to add that:

Skinux is still in the programs menu, Combo didn't kill it.

SKINSXDK googles up as belonging to Kodak easyshare, which i have and need.

The WorldAntiSpy (skinux virus - fake AV site) had me thinking I may still be infected with something of that nature.

Also found that Advance System Care added the yahoo line to the Iobit toolbar and even though it is diabled in Addons. still has a hold over the searchbar.

Additionally the Iobit 4.3 toolbar is by Spigot

Not sure what to make of it all - maybe its just nothing -

Skinux is still loading up... it just won't die, but doesn't seem to be effecting anything.

I haven't seen or noticed any other malware issues, no IE redirects or fake AV scanner popups. Everything is behaving normally.

Oh, I did notice that "RUN" button is missing from the windows start button popup. It was there a few days ago, must have turned it off somehow or something is hiding it.

Ty Chaslang for the link, had seen it as the Kodak skin, just wanted to make sure it was the fake AV worldantispy.

Still seemed odd that Combo didnt get rid of it...after running the script for it.

Anyhow, I also got the "Run" button back in my startup, got clicked off in properties somehow.

    Everything is running great...

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
