Windows search problem? (Missing driver or something?)

At some point my Windows Search utility stopped working; it opens up fine, I can enter criteria and so forth, but then it does a 1 sec search and always informs me nothing was found. Even if I search for "microsoft" on my whole computer, it tells me nothing is there. I downloaded the newest version(??) - Windows Search 4, which has the semi-annoying, but perhaps useful indexing function, but the problem remains exactly as before; search finds nothing, and doesn't even search...

I'm thinking one of my drivers my be off or missing or something - like when I had the wireless LAN problem and it turned out my NDIS Usermode I/O Protocol had been turned off (it's hard to find when off), so WZC wouldn't work...

Any ideas or suggestions?

i disabled the indexing though because it was using too much RAM on my older computer, which only has 512MB; the max for it (unless there's some way around manufacturer specified RAM limits??)
