I must preface this post with my utmost thanks for all the help I've found here.

I think somehow this is tied to how I can't update windows. I had problems with malware last Christmas. Could it have re-manifested? Perhaps I didn't fully get rid of it?

I tried to update windows from what I thought was the windows update website after this stupid scare that was in the news recently. It asked me to download something that would better find out which updates it needed (post active x install)...or so I thought. Thinking it was Microsoft, I didn't think twice about it. There seems to be something wrong with AVG also. Along with taking up a lot of memory, it doesn't seem to be updating properly. I'm thinking of switching. Hopefully, I won't need to re-install windows too.

My laptop keeps crashing. After and before the scans...It won't sleep either when I close the screen. It crashes more quickly if I use the web. I had to do most of the scans in safemode. I think that there's a process that's lagging or something. About 2 months ago I noticed this "system" process that was always taking about 60-80K worth of memory after startup. It either wasn't there before or was taking much less memory. Don't know if that has to do with anything or not...

I got error #2 while running MGTools. It seems to come up more after the fix. ?

    Again, endless thanks.

    Cheers,
    Tom

Possibly it was valid as Microsoft has made changes to Windows Update and WGA. If you have problems getting Windows Updates, you should post about them in the Software Forum.

You do not have the current version installed. AVG8 is out of date. Download version 8.5. Then uninstall version 8 and reboot afterwards. Then install version 8.5. That is assuming you want to keep AVG.

Your logs are clean. These are not malware issues. I suggest that you post in the Software Forum.

    You're welcome.

It is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
