I ran Windows Update on my PC (Acer Aspire 5920; Windows Vista HP SP2) and it offered me one optional update: Broadcom – Network – Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet.

I chose to install it. The install failed. The error code given is 80070005. What does this error code indicate?

Is there a solution to this problem?

There does not seem to be anything specific about error code 80070005 on Microsoft’s web site.

    Hello,

The error code you stated means that you don't have enough permission to install windows updates on the computer. You need to log on to a adminstration account and try the windows updates again.

With regards to OPs Windows Update: Access Denied Error Code 80070005: The previous poster (sexyandy81) is correct...

This particular 'Windows Update Error' is always caused simply because you are either not logged in an Administrator (and/or your username does not have administrator privileges).

Once you have logged off and logged on again (as an Administrator) you can just simply re-apply the Windows Update or hotfixes and that should work for you.

Side Note: While we're on this subject, "insufficient rights or privileges" are a very common thread of numerous other types of ‘Access Denied’ warnings and privilege problems in general, as well as code 80070005 in particular.

I appreciate the answers. To confound the problem, my account on the computer is the administrator account. I do not understand this contradiction?

    Just a thought here...

Here is something you might try: Since when using "Windows Update" it (usually) creates a System Restore Point before it makes any changes; you could try using the Windows System Restore applet in order to return your system to normal by going back to a recent restore point (which was created before you noticed the current problem).

Then you can try the Windows Update again to see if it might work for you.

Windows Updates tends to be behind like a lot of automated programs. Your best bet is to find the driver you need from the manufacturer if possible. A program like SlimDrivers has treated me pretty well with some of thse drivers also.

Computers that are a few years old are typically not updated from where you bought it yet the manufacturer often does update if that makes sense to you. In other words name brand computers often provide updates for a year or two then stop yet the drivers are often updated by the manufacturer. The manufacturer is better served by stopping updates so that you want to buy a new computer obviously :)

Oddly enough I am showing that the laptop you have is an Intel based network card from everything I have seen, not Broadcom. Worth a try to get the Intel drivers and see if it takes them. They can be gotten at:

I've just checked in Device Manager. Under Network Adapter there is both "Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection" and "Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet". The former, i.e. Intel, has always been there. The latter, i.e. Broadcom, didn't used to be there. I don't know where it's come from. I certainly do not ever recall downloading it.

I wonder it it would be safe to delete, in other words whether it will impact on my PC's connection to the WiFi router.
