Windows Update has knacked my computer :((

    Hi

After doing a Windows Update yesterday, an optional download was the new driver for my NVidia GeForce 6200 card. 'What could go wrong?' I asked myself. The current (perfectly fine) NVidia card driver has been removed, and the downloaded driver doesn't load. Worse, the new driver on THEIR website does not load either. I cannot find a previous driver on their website to re-install, I cannot find the CD ROM that came with my card, and my device manager dosn't even list my card either!

Much worse, I tried to do system restore and I couldn't go back further than the current day! It's as if I never owned the computer until yesterday! To top it all, when I shut down, the standby option has been removed too! What have MS done to my lovely computer??!!! :cry

Now when I scroll down a webpage, it keeps realigning itself instead of a smooth scroll, and the screen size doesn't fit like it used to do.

What have they done???? Please help me!!!

    Thanks

Windows drivers are notoriously problematic for things like this so I suggest if you see an update for a product in the future in windows update check with the manufacturer for the updated drivers.

Ya, I never ever accept a Windows video driver update, sadly there's too may stories like yours. At least it's easily fixable.

I'm glad to hear it. So how do I fix it? Because I've tried all I know :(

    Bill

Thanks for that, but every driver I download cannot 'see' my card! I have done a scan on PC Pitstop for my list of components, and that doesn't see it either!! Do I have to take the card out, and put it back for the system to wake up??

    Cheers

    OK Bill

I've done it. It does see my card, but I do have a yellow 'X' on a blue background for the 3D accelerator, the Open GL, and for the Direct X components too.

What do you wantto see on the screenshot (and how do I do a screenshot?!).

    Many thanks Bill, you're a star :)

'The NVIDIA set-up program could notlocate any drivers compatible with your hardware. Set-up will now exit'.

This is the message I get every time I try to install a driver :(

    It's driving me mad!!

    Cheers

    Hi Bill

Nope - it can't see it. 'The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products'.

I currently have IE running now with huge holes in the window!

    What the fudge is happening??

Go into safe mode with networking and see if IE is still the same. Try to update the driver from there.

Well Scooter i have to confess i am totally baffled, the card has got some output or you would not have any graphics unless you have an onboard (inbuilt with your motherboard) graphics.

We can look for another solution, just follow these instruction and when you have device manager open check if any yellow triangles are next to any of the entries, if you have one next to the graphics entry double click it and it will open a pane that will give the option to update drivers.

    #

Click on Start and then Control Panel.
    #

Click on the Performance and Maintenance link.

Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simple double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4.
    #

In the Performance and Maintenance window, click on the System icon near the bottom of the window.
    #

In the System Properties window, click on the Hardware tab.
    #

With the Hardware tab selected, click on the Device Manager button.

PS thanks for jumping in Augie as i am really confused with this.

Done, and it does have a question mark next to the video card emblem. It says it's a 'Code 1' problem - not functioning properly. It won't let me roll back the driver as there are no previous ones to roll back to (thanks MS update!). It also asks me to install driver from a current location (disk is missing, and the downloaded ones don't work). I'll give Augie's route a try.

Incidentally, Everest says I have GeForce 6200 AGP card. There is no listing for AGP card in NVidia's driver downloads, so I have just been downloading standard 6200 drivers. Am I doing the right thing?

    Cheers for all your help.

How do I do that Augie? I seem to have problems even accessing safe mode on this computer :(

It was at first. I've tried others since then. I've downloaded the one from Bill just now, but will wait to see if I can get into safe mode before trying to install it this time.

    Cheers

BTW - it seems a lot smaller in size than one straight rfom NVIDIA's site. Will this still be ok?

It's smaller because it's way older, like 5 years older than the release I pointed you to. Newer is not always better so try Bill's link, it can't hurt.

In any case, you should turn off automatic updates and set it to advise only so this doesn't happen again. Then you can choose what you want to let through. i.e., hide anything to do with graphics.

Splendid. Thanks for all your help you guys :) :) :) You're worth your weight in gold.

All we need now is for you to make sure England win the World Cup - then I'll know you CAN work miracles!!!

    All the very best......

Now...... I have never update anything to do with my ASUS motherboard. Should I even try......?? ;)

Great! Glad to see that your video card wasn't failing.

Nah, Canada is going to win! :p

Now about that ASUS motherboard update...:eek :-D Seriously, except for video card updates, there is rarely the need to update except if you make a hardware change. If it ain't broken, don't 'fix' it.;)
