Hi...by now it's probably obvious that I've reinstalled winXPpro and I'm configuring things and trying to get back to that nice, stable system I had in a dream.
My latest problem is that when I head to windows update I get a page that displays this message:

""Thank you for your interest in Windows Update
Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.
The latest version of Windows Update is available on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 (except Windows 2000 Datacenter Server), Windows XP, and the Windows Server 2003 family.""

I'm hoping it's not just me that is having this problem....but if it is: any idea how I'd fix it?
Thanks again, and again, for all the help I've received so far,
    -522.

It's Blaster. windowsupdate.microsoft.com has been under constant DDOS attack since the 16th.

I thought they dropped the domain and Blaster only DoSed windowsupdate(s?).com

I got it yesterday while running IE on XP, so there's a glitch somewhere, ... but I went in to Intenet Options, Connections, LAN Settings and changed the Automatically detect settings switch (I forget whether I had it checked or not, but I changed it to the other way) and tried again, and it worked the second time. Worth a try.

That switch can be the cause of a lot of Windows Update trouble. It's mentioned on the WU Troubleshooting page, way down near the bottom of the list.

I hadn't heard about the constant attacks on WU, but that stands to reason, doesn't it? So it's probably not a switch at all that's interfering with your connection to WU, but it's still worth a try.

It shouldn't affect anything all it is is use DHCP instead of static IP and predefiend DNS servers.

Maybe. Guess I don't know. If it isn't that, I'd imagine it is what the server does when load is too high (to prevent a DOS from actual requests). I saw this page yesterday middday, but checking right now there is no problem. **shrugs**

Yeah, I just did an nslookup... "non-existant domain".

I gotta run a "strings" on the binary, I doubt that's the only DNS they use

PS. If this is a double post sorry, MG must be going crazy

NOw this is weird. I just used IE to successfully log into WU, ran the scan, and got this message: Critical update:

MS03-026: Security Update for Windows XP (823980)
    Download size: 1.2 MB, < 1 minute
A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to remotely compromise a computer running Microsoft® Windows® and gain complete control over it. This security issue is the vulnerability that is exploited by the blaster worm. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer. Read more...

I knew I had that patch, so I checked my Installation history, and sure enough, it was there.

WiseWiz.........Maybe they discovered the first patch was too patchy, so they made another patch, to patch up what the first patch didn't patch. But no fear.......I'm sure they will come out with a patch soon, to solve the double-patch issue.:D Sorry...........couldn't resist. LOL
