Hi - am hoping someone will be able to assist as I'm at my wits end!

For quite some time now my windows update returns an error when it tries to install updates. I have tried everything I can think of, including:

    * Ensuring there are zero registry errors by using RegistryFix, version 5.5
    * Running the usual spyware progs - spybot, ccleaner, etc. All clean, big thumbs up.
    * Ensuring relevant registry entries have access defined to the SYSTEM user.

Microsoft told me that, basically, I couldn't have this issue as they'd not heard of it. But I do, I really do.

The following is a summary of the errors returned:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MsiInstaller
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 1024
    Date: 19/09/2006

    Description:
Product: Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003 - Update 'Visio 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2): VISIOSP2' could not be installed. Error code 1603. The program names change but the event code is always 1024 and the error code is always 1603.
When I reconsititute the data stringsthey all look, to me, like registry keys:

    9151040-6000-11D3-8 CFE-0150048383C9
    8B82536A-99F7-4815-9D9C-0725C56F345D

Indeed, I can find these values many times in the registry, always as a value under another key and in a 'folder' named DefaultIcon.

There is also a same-name folder for each under C:\WINDOWS\Installer.

Yet, no matter what I do I always get a failure when running the installer.

Anyone got any clues? It's driving me potty.

Error 1603 can be related to many things.

First of all it commonly occurs when there is not enough disk space.

Secondly emptying your temp files often resolves this issue. CCleaner is a good tool for this

If neither of the above work then you may have an issue with the windows installer service but try the above first . is a good tool for this

Thanks for the info folks. Unfortunately none of those tips has been successful. I noticed the following file in the TEMP directory: visioCA.log. As Visio is one of the aplications reported as unable to install updates for, I opended it. It contains the following lines, repeated on many dates:

    Entering ReRegMSXML - 9.20.2006 10.22.49
    DllRegisterServer executed on C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxml.dll.
    DllRegisterServer executed on C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxml2.dll.
    DllRegisterServer executed on C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxml3.dll.
    Exiting ReRegMSXML

Don't know if this means anything or is a red-herring but thought I'd post it in case.

Can you post the last few lines of the WIndowsUpdate log

    C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log

Don't post the whole log as it is invariablly quite large, if you can't find any relevant lines please delete the existing log and rerun windows update so we can see only the relevant parts.

The file was really huge so I copied it, then deleted the contents, and ran the update facility again. It produce quite a large file so I've only copied the last part of that here. Hopefully this is enough but let me know if not. And thanks for all the help - very much appreciated.

    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
    2. In the list of services, double-click Office Source Engine.
    3. View the Startup type list.
    4. If the startup type is set to Disabled, change the startup type to Manual. To do this, click Manual in the Startup type list, and then click OK.
    5. Try to install the Office update again.

Can you let me know which updates are failing (the KB number) and I will find the links for a manual install if the above doesn't help

The KB numbers I have are:

    KB907417

    KB914455
    KB921580
    KB913807
    KB921566
    KB917334

I already ensured that OSE had been started when I first applied the updates so I don't think there's an issue there. To be sure I rechecked and it is started.

This could be an issue with the Microsoft Installer support files. So,
grab the latest version (3.1 v2) and install that manually.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode. Rename the
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. You will lose your AU/WU
History, but that isn't really a big deal anymore. That folder will be
rebuilt the next time you go online to Microsoft Update.

    Now retry the updates

I did as you suggested then ran the manual update but I get the same message and the same events are logged. I've uploaded the file referenced as a zip file as it's rather large. I had a quick scan of it but there was nothing obvious to my novice eye.

OK - I've been looking through that file and I did find these lines that may have something to do with it:

Hmm that looks like it could be trying to install an update for a on office product with a different language to the update. The first part of the guid for office 2003 products identifies the language and that is the differing part

What language is your version of office

  23. CorballisT

    CorballisT Private E-2

Well that depends on where you look. In word and excel I have English (UK) set as the default language. However, in Outlook, no matter what I do I cannot get it to do anything other than English (US). I can set the language to English (UK) but after I send a message it immediately reverts to English (US). This is very annoying because it means that I'm forever setting it to UK so as not to fall foul of spell checker.

  24. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

    Actually I am mistaken.
its bytes 4 to 8 that denote the language which is 0409
0409 hexadecimal converts to 1033 decimal, which represents English.

The part that differes is the first 4 bytes:

expected {90CA0409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9} = the 9 indicates normal RTM, the 0 indicates enterprise edition, the CA indicates Microsoft Office Small Business Edition 2003

found product {91120409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9} = the 9 indicates normal RTM, the 1 indicates retail/oem edition, the 12 indicates Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003

As you can see microsoft update seems to be confused! Not quite sure how to fix it, have you tried using office update instead of windowsupdate or microsoft update ?

  25. CorballisT

    CorballisT Private E-2

Yep - I tried that but also got an error there. Maybe I should try talking to MS again now that we know that there is this issue with the keys?

  26. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

Well MS should have been able to idetify the error from that error message, I am only going on what I know, I didn't realise you'd already spoke to them.

Guess I should have read the first post better lol
