    Hello...

When trying to use the Windows Update application, I experience the following:

1- At the point where the message for the "new" splash-screen for the "new" Windows Update format indicates "Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating software for use with the website", the Internet Explorer Pop-up blocker activates, indicating: "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer stopped this site from installing an ActiveX control on your computer. Click here for options..."
2- When the pop-up information bar is clicked with the intent of activating the "pertinent" ActiveX control, the Internet Explorer indicates "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to install this software? - Name: wuweb_site.cab?1121897139328 - Publisher: Unknown Publisher."
3- Next, hitting either Install or Don't Install both lead to the same "new" splash-screen message of: "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. Take the following steps to try solving the problem:
    Refresh the page.
In Internet Explorer, delete your Temporary Internet Files by going to the Tools menu and clicking Internet Options.
Close and then re-open Internet Explorer.
If these steps don’t work, try visiting the site later or using the resources provided below."

I think that the problem may be with some sort of glitch with the "new" Windows Installer v3.1, whose interrupted installation appears to be in suspended animation somewhere. What's your opinion on what gives?

P.S.: I have run HijackThis and have created a log file that can be made available to you if necessary, thanks!

I tried your suggestion for adding Microsoft URLs to the trusted sites zone. Did not work (still got the unknown publisher). Active X controls are currently set for prompt for action. Should I set Active X security for accepting all active x controls with out prompts. If not do you have anymore suggestions?.

Thanks for your hel and support.!

Try Reseting to Medium level. You could also try click the Default Level button. If that does not help, I would suggest posting in the Software Forum because I do not believe this is a malware problem. I here of many cases of problems with Windows Update and there can be many reasons for problems. More of them are related to other issues than to malware.

Another thing you could try is looking for a line similar to the below in your HijackThis log and have HJT fix the line:
    O16 - DPF: {6414512B-B978-451D-A0D8-FCFDF33E833C} (WUWebControl Class) - http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/V5Controls/en/x86/client/wuweb_site.cab?1121897139328

Do you have any problems accessing or download from other sites? Like even from Majorgeeks?
