I had my services down to 64 with relatively low computer usage. After I did my windows updates, which I haven't done in a while.............Now I have 82 services being used with 38% computer usage up from around 20%............

I have read that windows does these updates to increase efficiency and security. It's the security I am curious about. Is it really that helpful to do this when you already have programs set up to prevent virus/etc...?

Not ALL windows updates are good.

For example tow glitches in September for Win 7:
KB2732059 is an update for 8 but might be offered to 7 users even though it doesn't apply
    KB2754296 is offered as important
This is a BETA for MS security Essentials. I hid that one along with the top one. I'm not willing to be a tester for MS on my only computer running Windows 7.

KB2735855 is for 3rd party firewalls. I run Win 7's firewall so that is another update I chose to not install.
