I have my Wi-Fi Internet connection set-up as a metered connection.

It is my understanding that if you have a metered connection Microsoft informs you that there are updates waiting but it will not automatically install them. This morning, when I switched my PC on it started to update. That meant I wasn't able to do what I wanted before leaving home for work.

Am I wrong in thinking that having a metered connection should prevent auto-updates?

Yes. MS has started pushing updates whether you indicate a metered connection or not.
