Ever since I updated to WU v6 it freezes during the update. About 2 hours later it says "Selected updates failed to install".

Automatic Updates will popup and say "downloading updates", after about 30 minutes of sitting there it will go away.

This started after I installed the new WU software. I found a site @ MS that said remove some files, that worked but again it said "update to v6", I did once again, rebooted...same thing.

    Any suggestions?

It looks like this for about 2 hours, then says "Select updates cant be installed".

As D3m3nt3d suggests try Custom and update 1 at a time until you find the update that isn't downloading. If it fails to DL from Winupdate try to manually download to your desktop and run the update from the desktop. This could be a server issue on Microsofts end, it has happened in the past that an update just won't DL for a couple of days.

Same thing when I try that way as well, I manually downloaded each update so I got them all installed.

Not sure whats going on with WU.

Not sure WUS is so difficult to trouble shoot. Give the below solutions a try.

    1. Make sure that BITS is Started and Automatic
    2. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader <----- Delete the entire folder
    3. Do the following:
    Click Start.
    Click Control Panel.
    Double-click Internet Options.
Click Delete Cookies and click OK.
Click Delete Files and put a checkmark in delete all offline content and click OK.
    Click Settings, click View Objects
Delete all the objects in this folder. If some objects cannot be deleted, please restart the computer and try again.
Click the Security tab, Click Internet and click Default Level.
    Click the Custom Level button.
Click Enable" for all under the title ActiveX controls and plug-ins.
Click Enable for all under the title Scripting.
    Click OK.
Click the Privacy tab, and click Default button.
Click the Advanced tab, click the Restore Defaults button and then uncheck the Enable third-party browser extensions option.
    Click OK.
Click Start > Run > type cmd and then click ok
In the command prompt type the following:

    regsvr32 wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 wups.dll
    regsvr32 wuweb.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 mssip32.dll

I've tried all of the other stuff you mentioned, same results.

I think I have found out my problem, the BITS service will not start for some reason.

Now I got to find out why is wont start and how to fix it.

bjgarrick, could you please tell me what you did to resolve your BITS problem. I am running into the exact same thing. I did everything Shadow suggested, no help.

Each time I go to the Windows Update website http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us the download/install fails and when I try to start BITS I get the same error message you mentioned below.

I know you are a spyware guy (not software) but this is the only thread I found that matches my problem.

Over the last couple of days, I have done lots of things to no avail - the MSFT support people had me try a lot of stuff (it didn't work) but they got me to send them a lot of data to analyze. I tried things I found here on MG - they didn't work either. I clicked into Windows Update Newsgroup and found a guy that had been dealing with the same problem for the last few weeks -- he is not sure how this fixed the problem but he did the following... it got BITS running for him and me:

    Start/Run then the following --
    regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll
    regsvr32 msxml.dll

    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 initpki.dll
    regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

    reboot

BITS was running at this point and I was able to use Windows Update to download/install a fix. I hope this may be of help to someone.

Just a little more info on the BITS fix I posted below. Others on the Windows Update Newsgroup are also indicating that fixed their problem. A common thing that most (all?) had done recently was run SymNRT.exe to get rid of various Norton software - I ran that utility about two weeks before I noticed the BITS problem. I don't know if this is the actual cause or just anecdotal. Again, I hope this may be helpful.
